For more details see The IJA Although its origins might have dated from antiquity, the medieval tournament did not actually appear in written records until around the middle of the 10th century AD. The first recorded reference of such an organized event is dated in the year 1066, and makes mention of a certain Godfrey de Preuilly, who is described as having invented the medieval tournament. In fact, according to contemporary chronicles, he is reported to have been accidentally killed while taking part in his own invention. ( From The IJA .. read on). Extractions: Home Medieval Travel Guide eBooks As the sport of the Medieval Knights, jousting had no rival throughout the Middle Ages, and even down to the end of the 16th Century, he who "justed beste of all" was the finest sportsman. The rules and ceremonies of tournaments were defined by the same rigor as the chivalry itself. They were arranged by heralds according to the strictest ritual, and differed little if at all in different countries. Jousting Scene-15th Century. The Barrier Which Parted The Lists Is Clearly Shown Beside their armorial bearings, the combatants used many devices in honor of their ladies, or for disguise. To honor a lady, a combatant might wear for example "a red sleeve broidered with pearls", or he might choose to remain unknown and wear arms all of one color as the Black Knight in Ivanhoe. The arms and armor were those used in battle: swords, lances, battle-axes. The earliest tourneys were fought with blunted weapons, but soon, however, the knights found this insufficient, thirsting for a more stringent test of courage, more worthy of the honor of the Medieval Knights. Jousting, and especially the tournaments became very real imitations of war, in which sharp swords and lances were used. If the horse did not swerve, and the lances did not break, and either knight aimed true and held his lance firm, mortal wounds were often given. If both knights were unhurt and kept their seats, they wheeled their horses and charged again with fresh lances, till one or both were unhorsed. Then the victor also dismounted, and the combat was continued on foot with swords.

Extractions: When we think of the knight in shining armor, we almost automatically think of the grand joust. It's hard not to imagine the thunderous hoofbeats and the roar of the crowd as two knights race towards each other in a test of skill and nerve. The joust grew from the chaotic melee of the tournament . As restrictions were put on this dangerous form of combat practice, an event designed to test the horsemanship and weapons skill of the individual knight evolved, and eventually became the focus of the merry spectacle of the tourney. In the joust the knight used the lance, a weapon specifically designed for mounted combat. At first jousters would simply spur their horses towards one another, weapons ready, each attempting to push the other off his horse. Once on the ground, his battle was as good as lost, for the mounted warrior could run him down, trample him, or spear him with his lanceall while out of reach of the land-bound fighter. When the joust came to represent the horsemanship of the fighter, safeguards evolved. The lance was fitted with a three-pronged tip, a
Jousts And Tournaments The joust was a type of medieval sport which consisted of two horses charging at each other from opposite directions with a rider holding a sharp lance. http://www.kyrene.k12.az.us/schools/brisas/sunda/ma/1brian.htm

One man falls to the hard dirt ground. That's what happens at the scene of a joust. Tournaments started in France in the 11th century. They were public contests of courage and skill. Usually they were held to entertain royalty. They fought on an enclosed field. Many knights died. Many peasants were also killed when the horses went out of control. The armor was hot and stuffy. It weighed about 50 pounds. Some gloves were molded together and could not move. The horses the knights used were stallions. They are strong and nimble. The horses had to wear armor too. The ladies would give her favorite knight something like a scarf or a glove to show that he was their "special" knight. There was another kind of tournament called the melee. The melee consists of two teams with flags on their backs using clubs and blunt swords. The object was to knock the flags off. One of the less popular tournaments was on water. Where one knight had a lance and tried to knock his opponent off his boat while other people rowed forward. They also had martial arts and kickboxing. Lots of knights made money from tournaments. Tournaments were the highlight of castle life. A herald or knight issue a challenge. People made wooden stands decorated with pennants for the royalty. Small tents were made for the peasants. People were hired to keep track of the winners. Anyone was allowed to enter if they had a suit of armor, a horse , and a sword and shield.

Extractions: Published: October 22, 2004, 12:15 PM PDT TalkBack E-mail Print del.icio.us Digg this update Advanced Micro Devices plans to unfurl next week a blueprint for building a low-price computer aimed at providing Internet access to people in so-called emerging markets. Dubbed the Personal Internet Communicator, the machine is geared toward families who make the equivalent of between $1,000 and $6,000 annually. Three companies in India and Latin America will be among the first to market versions of the machine, an AMD representative said. The Personal Internet Communicator, or PIC as AMD calls it, will cost about $185 without a display. To reach that price, AMD selected several standard PC components, including one of its own Geode x86 processors, 128MB of Samsung RAM and a 10GB Seagate hard drive. The company also specifies a version of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, fitted with Windows XP-extensions, allowing it to provide consumers with a graphical interface, e-mail, Web browsing, instant messaging and word processing. The PIC machines will also be able to play multimedia files and show PDF and PowerPoint files, AMD said.
