Extractions: Sports fans in the Philadelphia area are pretty knowledgeable, especially when it comes to football. Since entering the National Football League in 1933 the Philadelphia Eagles have led those fans on a roller coaster ride, experiencing all the highs and lows the league has to offer. While it's been more than forty-five years since the Eagles last captured an NFL title, the team's relative success in recent seasons is building anticipation of a return to past glories. But don't be fooled, the rich history of pro football in this region doesn't begin and end with the Eagles. After all, before our beloved Birds there were the beloved, ...

Gridiron Football -- Britannica Online Encyclopedia Britannica online encyclopedia article on gridiron football version of the sport of football so named for the vertical yard lines marking the rectangular http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9108490/gridiron-football
Extractions: Focus On Sport/Getty Images version of the sport of football so named for the vertical yard lines marking the rectangular field. Gridiron football evolved from English rugby and soccer (association football); it differs from soccer chiefly in allowing players to touch, throw, and carry the ball with their hands, and it differs from rugby in allowing each side to control the ball in alternating possessions. The sport, played with 11 on each side, originated in the United States, where it was largely developed and eventually became the country's leading spectator sport. It quickly spread to Canada (where it evolved into a 12-man game), though it never achieved the great popularity and status of ice hockey there. Gridiron football has not been taken up in the rest of the world to the same degree as other American sports such as basketball and baseball. Since the 1980s, however, primarily through the marketing efforts of the National Football League, teams and leagues have been established in Europe, and the game has achieved a degree of international popularity through television.

All 19 ISU seniors, dressed in yellow shorts and red jerseys, gather together inside the Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility. Ten of those players had been together since day one in 2003 when former Cyclones coach Dan McCarney recruited and brought them together in Ames. (0) comments by Brett McIntyre With only one chance left for ISU fans to see the most productive receiver in school history play in person, fans might be feeling a little nostalgic. Todd Blythe however, is not. "Right now it still feels like any other week to me," Blythe said. "You can tell me over and over this is my last home game, but it really won't sink in I think until after this game. (0) comments by Pat Brown and Tommy Birch He's got the breakout speed, and now he's starting to find his groove. Alexander Robinson has suddenly become a force in Iowa State's backfield, totaling three touchdowns on 46 carries over the last two games. His 149-yard performance at Missouri helped him burst onto the scene, and he followed that up with a two-touchdown showing last week against Kansas State.
