Sheffield Goalball goalball club for blind and visually impaired players. Rules, rankings, times and location of meetings. http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~diana/scorpions.html
Extractions: Added 12 January 2003 The Sheffield Goalball Group is a bunch of visually impaired people who, for reasons best known to themselves, enjoy throwing themselves on the floor and throwing a large hard ball at each other whilst blindfolded. Strangely enough, we think this is a fun way to spend our time. We also participate in various tournaments around the UK. We train on Monday evenings from 6-7pm at the Blind Institute on Mappin Street in Sheffield. For more information about training, email sheffield.scorpions@bigfoot.com Goalball was originally developed in 1946 by Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle, in an effort to help rehabilitate blinded war veterans. It has been an event at the Paralympics since 1976. Goalball is played on an indoor court measuring 18 x 9 metres. A team consists of 3 players, all of whom must wear blindfolds (usually blacked out ski masks), so that noone has any sight advantage. The object of the game is to roll the ball past the other team into their goal. In order to defend the goal, the players must dive onto the floor and lie stretched out in order to block the ball with their bodies. The ball has bells inside it so that you can hear it coming, and the court has tactile markings so you know where you are (string taped onto the floor). The game can soon become fast and furious, with balls reaching speeds of up to 50 mph., so the game requires fast reactions, courage, and intense concentration.

Goalball Goalball, a sport for the blind, is our most recent addition to Adaptive Athletics at the U of A. Blind athletes compete in tournaments nationwide, as well as in Mexico, including the USABA Goalball Nationals in Colorado Spring in June. Our team consists of blind and visually-impaired student athletes who compete at the highest levels and excel academically. Here at the University of Arizona we have world-class adaptive technologies and facilities designed to assist the blind and visually-impaired, and all students with disabilities, in our Disability Resources. Visit IBSA for more information about this sport. The game is played on a gymnasium floor in a court the same size as a volleyball court. Sidelines, hashmarks, and other court markers consist of rope taped to the floor, providing a tactile environment in which to play. All players, regardless of actual vision, are strictly blindfolded while on the court, providing equal opportunity for all participants. The goalball, larger and heavier than an basketball, has bells inside it that provide an audible sound as the ball is rolled along the floor to the opposing team. When the ball is moved in-bounds past the back line of the defending team's court, the offensive team has scored a goal, equal to one point. The ball must be rolled on the floor, not thrown, to be in play, and penalties are assessed if the ball is not on the floor in time, as determined by the 'overthrow line.' Two seven-minute halves and two referees regulate play, which may go into overtime if the score is tied at the end of regulation play.

Together with two other blind teammates it's your job to prevent a three pound rubber ball from being thrown past you into a soccer-like goal. The only sense you can use is your hearing to detect the small bells inside the ball. In eight-tenths of a second you must determine its location, direction and speed as it streaks toward you, and then throw your body in position to block it. If you're successful, you then have 10 seconds to locate the ball, stand up, orient yourself and throw it back at your opponent's goal. That's the excitement of goalball! Goalball is a sport that was created after World War II in an effort to give blinded veterans a physical activity. Because athletes who play the sport today have varying levels of sight ability, they all wear an eye covering so that everyone in the game is totally blind. It's usually played on a basketball court with taped or raised lines so players can feel the markings and know where they are on the court. Today Goalball is played by thousands of blind children and teens around the world. According to Tony Jepson, a member of the board of directors of Utah Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired, "Blind kids don't have a lot of opportunities to get out and exercise and socialize." This sport gives them the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of being part of an athletic team.
