News Archive Dundee Northern Lights were established in 2004 and are currently the most northernly affiliated floorball team in the UK. The main aim of the club is to promote the sport of floorball in the Tayside area. From humble beginnings Dundee Northern Lights now have around 30 club members and have had increasing success in the Northern League. The floorball season is once again just around the corner. Sunday sees the first of this seasons games with Dundee in action at Mayfield in Dundee against Balwearie Lightning and the new guys in the Northern League, Forth. Forth are made up of some ex Balwearie players as well as a load of players new to the Northern League. Early indications suggest that they will be stiff opposition and should give a few teams a run for their money. Balwearie Lightning have high hopes this season and a few of their players have indicated they are looking to make progress this season by toppling some of the big guns. This Sunday could be a great test for a new look Dundee squad.

Well, it's a kind of icehockey-like sport, only there's no ice and no puck and the sport is normally not quite as violent as icehockey... Essentially, you play it on a court with shoes on your feet and a plastic stick in your hands. Instead of a puck, you use a very light plastic ball, slightly larger than a tennis ball. Instead of using your fists and elbows, you use your brain and technique (at least some of us do). It's a lot of fun and plenty of exercise and sweat Floorball originated in Sweden sometimes in the 1970s, and has since been spreading like a virus across northern and central europe. It is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. In North America, it is still only played at a handful universities, and as far as we know, we are the first non-academic club. Unihockey is een zaalsport die het midden houdt tussen veldhockey en ijshockey. Daarnaast is er verwantschap met streethockey (inline hockey) en rolhockey (rollerhockey). Unihockey is een sticksport die gespeeld wordt in een normale sporthal of gymzaal. Je speelt met een kunststof stick en een licht kunststof bal met gaten. Het materiaal is licht, daardoor is de sport snel en veilig en bovendien heel eenvoudig te leren. Bedenk daarbij dat om het veld een 50cm hoge boarding staat en de regels eenvoudig zijn en je hebt een snelle en intensieve sport. Unihockey is een ideale sport om de jeugd (maar ook volwassenen en ouderen) meer te laten bewegen. Unihockey is veilig, intensief en vooral heel leuk. Een ander sterk punt is de variatie. Iedereen kan na 10 minuten instructie en oefening al een leuke wedstrijd spelen, terwijl die razendsnelle lichte bal voldoende uitdaging biedt voor een leven lang oefening, want de balcontrole, de pass en het schot kunnen eigenlijk altijd wel beter.

Extractions: When I first heard about the draw, I envied Blast for getting the easy pick. Win twice and go straight to the final, no frills about it. Our draw couldn't get that much worse, our first two games (should things go according to plan, which they did) against the two toughest teams: Innebandy North and Hailstorm (USM). Nerves made the first match seem like a walkover, InneNorth condescendingly letting us run over them, 4-0. Even, at one point, with one (wo)man down. Mixed up netball (been playing it a lot) with floorball, and thought 3m was 3ft, so when the ref blew the whistle I just stood there, my jaw hanging open until the others hurried me out. We all knew Hailstorm would be tougher, especially after their 5-0 thumping of F/liners Guppies. And boy, oh boy, they were. Went down twice, but we hit back each time through penalties (Felicia, from Hailstorm, showing wonderful goalie instincts and giving away two penalties), we held out for the shootout.
