Extractions: SAMAHAN PHILIPPINE DANCE COMPANY HISTORY The Samahan Philippine Dance Company was organized in July 1974 under the direction of Lolita Di oso Carter, Ph.D. Dr. Carter, a dance instructor at Grossmont College El Cajon , CA. at that time, volunteered her services to organize a performing ensemble as a contribution to the growing Philippine Community of San Diego. Her knowledge of Philippine Dance and Music came naturally from her experiences growing up in the Philippines and being involved in all facets of Filipino life in a small town including activities of a large extended family, church and its numerous religious observances, school programs and community celebrations specially town fiestas. Formal education in Philippine Folk Dance at the University of the Philippines and classes with Francisca Reyes Aquino, eminent authority on Philippine Folk Dance provided Carter with a solid background in Philippine Folk Dance. The Samahan Philippine Dance Company started out as part of the Youth Program of the Council of Pilipino-American Organizations of San Diego County . The purpose of the program was to provide Filipino youth opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation of their cultural heritage. The name Samahan (meaning working together) was selected by the participants who were mostly students from area junior and senior high schools and San Diego State University . The educational and recreational program soon became an amateur performing group besieged with requests for performances from various organizations, institutions and individuals.

One attacker thrusts toward the defender, who respond by either evading or deflecting the knife while replying with a stab or slash to the attacker, who simply stands in place while the knife is planted cleanly onto the targeted spot on his body. As I mentioned in my earlier post, people hardly die instantly from a single knife wound. I can think of less than 5 spots on the body that will instantly stop an attacker when hit with a knife. Those target points are not difficult to get to, which is actually a testament to how well our bodies have somehow evolved to protect these vital points.

Filipino Kali teaches weapons fighting before bare hand to hand combat as they do in other martial art styles. For example, a student in any Chinese martial arts is expected to master hand to hand combat before moving on to any form of weapons. Definition: martial art specializing in fighting with two baton-length sticks, with techniques adaptable to empty-hand or edged weapons. The terms "escrima" is thought to originate from the Spanish word "escrime", meaning to fence with a swoardand is thought to have originated during the Spanish occupation of the Phillipine Islands. Often used synonymously for arnis and kali.

Modern Arnis and I met years ago, when Guro Eric Alexander (Lakan Tatlo - 3rd degree black belt) gave me my first taste of the art. Since then, I have studied under Professor Remy Presas himself, and have worked out with a few of his close students, including Master Dr. Randi Schea, and Guro Raymond Montoya (Lakan Dalawa - 2nd degree black belt). In 1997, Professor Presas awarded Lakan Dalawa (2nd degree black belt) rank in Modern Arnis. At the request of the Professor, I founded the TAMU Modern Arnis Club here at in 1995. When I teach, I emphasize flow, real-life applications (i.e. convince me this'd work ), disarms and joint-work. I've found that my Modern Arnis training has helped in my understanding and application of kung fu as well - kind of a cross-pollination. One of the single best training tools in GM Presas' system is Tapi-Tapi, with all its variation, free-flowingness, and applications put in - WONDERFUL!
