If secured, fans of the emerging sport of cyclocross â which is an off-road version of a road race with a series of obstacles where riders dismount and are forced to carry their bikes â would likely flood into Bend for four to five days of races. Portland played host to the cyclocross championships in 2003 and 2004. The races were held at the Portland International Raceway. The spectator-friendly event pits riders against the clock on bikes that are a cross between road bikes and mountain bikes. The race could be held in forests, on dirt paths and open rolling terrain, according to USA Cycling, which holds the race annually. Because the championships typically occur the second weekend in December â when occupancy levels in Bend lodging properties are well below 40 percent â they would provide a welcome boost for the local tourism economy, LaPlaca said.

Singlespeed Cyclocross, By Tarik Saleh Single speed cyclocross is a beautiful thing, as very little can go wrong. A good chainline makes chainsuck irrelevant and you never never ever stack http://www.sheldonbrown.com/singlecross.html
Extractions: sheldonbrown.com sheldonbrown.net sheldonbrown.org WWW Single speed cyclocross is a beautiful thing, as very little can go wrong. A good chainline makes chainsuck irrelevant and you never never ever stack because you missed a shift going into a barrier and forgot to get off your bike. With a 135 spaced rear hub built without dish, the probability of tacoing your wheel is extremely low. Being a competitive single speeder, to me, means finishing at as well as (or at least nearly as well as, and sometimes much better than) you would have on a geared bike. This obviously can be very course-dependent (see below). If you want to be competitive as a single speeder in cross may I suggest the following: Be a good or great runner. There will be parts of the race that you can ride in the beginning that you will be forced to run toward the end. To be competitive you need to be able to run as fast as or faster than those who choose to ride that part of the course. You should also be able to run faster than those around you on the run ups. On anything that points uphill, you need to be going faster thatn anyone around you, because you will get your butt whipped on any downhills that are smooth or long enough to allow pedaling. If you are one of those people who walk up the runnups the last few laps, you will get eaten up and spit out on a single speed. Choose a good gear. This obviously is the key. You want to chose a gear that lets you not get dropped too badly on the flats and allows you to ride as much as possible on the hills. If you have to get off your bike you better be able to run well (see above). I find a 2:1 is best for me. Although I could see going a bit higher as I get faster. Travis Brown runs a much higher than 2:1, but he is a machine and a half. Being a mere machine, 34:17 works well for me, although I am going to try some races in the 34 16 soon. i think if you are running anything less than 2:1 you need to be able to spin like a mad bastard, consistently through the whole race.

Extractions: The ACF calls it quits THE AMERICAN CYCLO-CROSS FOUNDATION, created in 1999 to help send unfunded U.S. riders to the world cyclo-cross championships, has sent out its last money order. In 2004, we mailed $12,075 to members of the U.S. team that contested the cyclo-cross world championships in Pont-Chateau, France. USA Cycling underwrote the $3500-a-head cost of travel for its automatic qualifiers: elites Jonathan Page and Alison Dunlap; U23's Jesse Anthony and Jeremy Powers; and juniors Jamey Driscoll and Tucker Thomas. And the USAC Development Foundation offered $500 apiece to U23's Alan Obye and Mike Cody, as well as to juniors Andy Brooks and Konrad LeBas. But everyone else on the 18-rider team had to come up with their own $3500 if they wanted to wear stars-and-stripes kit in France. So once again, the ACF asked the U.S. cycling community for its help, and once again you responded, with unprecedented generosity. Last year, you helped us send $8,000 to the men and women who represented the United States at world's. This year, donations exceeded $13,000. Charles Pelkey, Chris Zigmont

Extractions: What is Cyclo-Cross? The classic image of cyclo-cross is the high speed dismount-remount manoeuvre. This takes place when the bike is to be carried on the shoulder up a particularly steep or muddy incline, or else when an obstacle on the course cannot be ridden. In terms of technique, cyclo-cross is one of the most difficult forms of cycle racing. The bicycle resembles the road machine, with its dropped handlebars, 700C size wheels and relatively narrow tyres. Yet the conditions for these two disciplines could hardly be more different. For a start cyclo-cross is a winter-time sport. Woodland trails, open meadows, and short, steep hills are the main features of a cyclo-cross course. Normally the circuit is in the region of 2.5-3km, and the race duration around one hour. Gradually cyclo-cross specialists emerged, and the sport became dominated by riders who were little known in road racing. Apart from some notable exceptions - led by Adri Van der Poel - this remains the case today. Yet cyclo-cross stars do feature prominently at the top level of mountain bike racing - a sport far closer related to cyclo-cross than to road.

Extractions: About Cyclo-Cross Winter Fun: Cyclo-Cross (often abbreviated to 'Cross) is generally an autumn and winter sport. Massed starts make for exciting races, usually no more than an hour in length and shorter for juniors, women and veterans. There are usually free-to-enter races for younger riders. Some organisers are now starting to run summer series, which are proving very popular. Lapping it Up! Cyclo-Cross races are usually multi lap events, held on short (typically less than a mile and often less than half a mile), grassy courses, generally in public parks or on school playing fields. Less technically demanding than Mountain Biking, Cyclo-Cross often requires riders to dismount to clear artificial obstacles often wooden boards. The ability to swap smoothly and quickly from riding to running and back to riding in one fluid motion is a key skill for advanced riders. Private Battles: The short lap lengths mean that better riders often lap some of the slower competitors, but thats not the end of the race you can still submerge yourself in the action, enjoy your own private battles and forget whether you are first or a hundred and first thats the beauty of the sport: its what you make of it that counts.
