They did terribly, they crashed, but they were a media sensation, a merchandising wet-dream (I had a Jamaican Bobsled Team sweater myself) and eventually the subject of the Disney Film "Cool Runnings". The last members of the original team retired by 1999, and original team member Chris Stokes was elected president of the Jamaica Bobsled Federation. Jamaica has a thriving bobsled scene to this day, now fielding teams in both the men's and women's competitions. In 1992 the two man teams placed 34th and 35th and the four man team placed 24th. In Lillehammer in 1994 they stunned the world when the four man team placed 14th, beating the US, the Russians, the French and one of the Italian teams.

Extractions: CESANA, Italy Canada's Helen Upperton and Jennifer Ciochetti put together a pair of solid runs to capture a gold medal yesterday in a bobsled World Cup. Calgary's Upperton and Edmonton's Ciochetti tamed the fast track from the 2006 Olympics, winning in a two-run combined time of one minute 55.23 seconds for their second gold-medal performance of the season. "I was totally surprised by our result today because we weren't that fast in training, so it was hard to figure out where we'd be this week," Upperton said. "I love this track, but I am always fourth here, so I told my driver coach this week that I can't be fourth again." Americans Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming won the silver in 1:55.40. Germany's Sandra Kiriasis and Berit Wiacker were third in 1:55.45. Kaillie Humphries of Calgary and Shelley-Ann Brown of Pickering, Ont., were fifth in the Canada 2 sled in 1:55.95.

The first is to win the gold medal. The second is to let young girls know that they, too, can pursue their bobsled dreams. Bobsledding role models Jean Racine and Gea Johnson. "When I was growing up, little girls were encouraged to participate in sports like tennis and basketball, but never bobsledding," said Racine, 23, driver of the American women's two-person sled. "Well, I want that to change that for the next generation. I want to be the person today's young girls can look to and say to themselves, 'Hey, I can bobsled if I want to.'" "One day," Racine continued, "people will see women bobsledders as bobsledders first and women second."

Extractions: Boston, MA In the two-man event, Langton teamed with national champ Mike Kohn for two runs of 48.96 and 48.97, a combined time of 1:37.93. The runner-up time was a combined 1:38.47. Langton and Kohn's starts were the two best of the competition. Kohn earned a bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy. "Kohn had a great race, and Langton did an amazing job pushing a 4.89," men's bobsled head coach Brian Shimer said in a release on the U.S. bobsledding web site. "They really set themselves apart from the field at the start. This is only Langtons second race, and he will be internationally competitive. Hes well ahead of the curve for such a young brakeman." Langton is in his first season as a member of the U.S. Bobsled Team. Looking for a new sport to compete in after graduating from Northeastern, Langton contacted U.S. National Bobsled Team officials last April and was invited to physical testing at the Olympic Training Center in September. There, he recorded 677 out of a possible 700 points in testing, which was the highest total of any athlete at the camp. Langton will be competing in the World Cup, which takes place in several parts over the next few months. The first competition is in Calgary, Alberta, from Nov. 26-Dec. 1. It continues in Park City, Utah from Dec. 3-8, then goes to Lake Placid, N.Y. from Dec. 10-16 before breaking for the holidays. Ultimately, Langton is competing for a spot at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Extractions: February 24, 2007 at 12:50 pm ( Adirondack New York After some coffee and breakfast, Jennifer and I drove to the bobsled course at the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic Sports Complex Lake Placid , just past the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex . The tickets are a little pricey at $65 US a person, but I think it was definitely worth it. Before you can ride, you basically have to sign your life away on a waiver The entire course is about a mile, but they only let the tourists do the half mile course. They provide a driver and a brake man. I sat just behind the driver. Jennifer was behind me and in front of the brake man. The whole thing is over in less than a minute, but we still went over 50 miles per hour! The g-forces were incredibly strong and tried to pull my body down during most of the ride. Into the turns, the bobsled went up to where we were parallel to the ground! Everyone should get a chance to try this out!
