Extractions: Craig Poxon Rollover animation "This was quite a conservative jump, but that's because it was the first of it's kind for me and changes (such as wearing the restrivtive wingsuit) must be made slowly to stay safe. I spent approximately 25 seconds in freefall (the record here by an experienced jumper, in fact the guy who made the suit I was wearing, has freefallen for a minute), dropping 1700 feet, deploying at 2200 feet above the landing area (this is conservative as it is similar to a skydiving altitude deployment, whereas in BASE there are no rules and openings can be as low as a few hundred feet - if you have the balls/experience).Pulling higher is sometimes necessary in order to make designated landing areas depending on wind conditions. By my calculations, I moved away from the cliff face by about 0.4 of a mile!" C. Poxon

Maybe you have, but more to the point is, have you ever imagined what makes it possible for someone to put themselves in that position of wanting to jump enough, that they themselves now find themselves at the launch point. This does not happen by accident. This is the culmination, the coming together of fantasy, desire, faith, knowledge, ability, visualisation. Accepting a challenge of your own design, a brutal confrontation between ones personal life and safety andputing ones self out on a limb, far from the safety we naturally yearn for.' - Chuck

Extractions: BASEjumping is jumping off fixed objects with a parachute. 'Wingsuit BASEjumping' is jumping from a fixed object (usually a cliff) with a Wingsuit and a parachute. The sport is often misreported by the media and is subsequently misunderstood by many people. Hopefully the information on this page and that contained in the linked pages will help to set the story straight - that is - BASEjumping is a beautiful sport that can be dangerous, but is mostly challenging, rewarding, transformative. It can take you to the most outrageously beaufiful places and give you a perspective few people will ever see. When pushed it can be brutal but more often it is magical. Using parachutes to descend from fixed objects is a pastime that evidence suggests has been practiced, though infrequently, for at least the last 900 years. Unlike most leaps that were practiced from the 12th century, today's BASE jumps emphasize launching without a previously inflated canopy. So, nearly anything that stands immobile and vertical or overhung could be considered jumpable. From the late 1700s through the 19th century, the advent of manned balloons drew the development of parachuting largely away from fixed objects to jumping from aircraft. It was not until the 20th century that fixed-object jumping slowly began to pick up momentum again as an extension of sport parachuting from aircraft.
