Often, people visit my public training group to see if "this is something, what they want to do". Being asked what they are looking for, they mostly say: I want to be able to defend myself. On the first sight this is not the wrong intention. The wish to be able to defend oneself is as old as the fights and the war between mankind. The methods of self defence reach from the invention of a stick over subtle kinds of fight-styles to the nuclear weapons of the present. The knowledge about the capability of the victim might leed the aggressor not to act against him. This is how the defender thinks and hopes that he will not be disturbed in his sphere. If this procedure will not work one time everybody wants to be prepared. But BUDO is more than that. BUDO, a generic term for all Japanese fighting techniques of the feudal times, means translated: Way of the knight or way of the Lords. It is not only the overcome of someone who attacks this would be also possible with a higher power or a weapon. BUDO is a way of life, a principle of life. Converting this principle into body action is AIKI JUJUTSU. Although AIKI JUJUTSU gives possibilities for the self defence and actions which might be used in a fight, this alone is never in the focus of this way of life.

Extractions: Brief History of Aikido Aikido is a relatively new Japanese Martial Art developed in the early part of the 20th century by "O-Sensei" Morihei Ueshiba (1883 1969). However, its beginnings are rooted in the unarmed combat systems used by the ancient Samurai and date back to the 12th century. Ueshiba devoted himself to hard physical conditioning and eventually to the practice of martial arts from early years of his life, receiving certificates of mastery in several styles of jujitsu, fencing, and spear fighting. In spite of his impressive physical and martial capabilities he wasn't satisfied. Morihei Ueshiba met Sokaku Takeda, Grandmaster of Daito-Ryu Aiki Jujutsu, during his time in Hokkaido sometime between 1905 and 1912. He was so impressed, that he became one of Takeda's students and subsequently became one of his most famous and talented disciples. Two people had the biggest influence on Morihei Ueshiba: his teacher in Daito-Ryu Aiki Jujutsu Grandmaster Sokaku Takeda and spiritual leader of Omoto Religion Sect, Onisaburo Deguchi. In 1925, Ueshiba organized his own style of Aikijujutsu, one that was more in line with his own needs for spiritual and physical development. During the next decade, Ueshiba's students (Shioda, Tomiki, Mochizuki, and others) were active in building a foundation for present-day Aikido. Ueshiba decided on the name "Aikido" in 1942 (before that he called his martial art "aikibudo" and "aikinomichi"). After the war, Aikido grew rapidly at the Kobukan (now called Hombu Dojo) under the direction of Kisshomaru Ueshiba (son of O'Sensei) Morihei Ueshiba had become famous as "O'Sensei" or "The Grand Teacher," the Master of Aikido.

One never fights strength and aggression with the same, but rather relies on more refined techniques and methods, such as taisabaki (body movement), kansetsuwaza (joint locks), kuzushiwaza (off balancing methods), nagewaza (throws), osaewaza (controlling techniques), kyusho no jutsu (vital point attacks) and of course, aiki (blending of movement and energy) to effortlessly redirect, neutralize, or control an opponent's attack. However, Morihei's deep involvment in the esoteric Omoto-kyo of religion and his varied experience later seriously altered the art into something more philosophical minded (and less practical minded) - an approach the Yoshinkan branch did not subscribe to. Extractions: Aikijutsu (Japanese Martial Art) is a form of jujutsu which emphasizes the 'early neutralization' of an attack. Like other forms of jujutsu it emphasizes throwing techniques and joint manipulations to effectively control, subdue or injure an attacker. It emphasizes using the timing of an attack to either blend or neutralize its effectiveness and use the force of the attacker's movement against them. Daito-ryu is characterized by the ample use of atemi, or the striking of vital areas, in order to set their jointlocking or throwing tactics. Some the art's striking methods employ the swinging of the outstretched arms to create power and to hit with the fists at deceptive angles. Tokimune regarded one of the unique characteristics of the art to be its preference for controlling a downed attacker's joints with one's knee in order to leave one's hands free to access one's weapons or to deal with the threat of other oncoming attackers. Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu, originally called Daito-ryu jujutsu, is a Japanese martial art that first became widely known in the early 20th century under the headmastership of Takeda Sokaku. Takeda had extensive training in several martial arts (including Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryu and sumo) and referred to the style he taught as "Daito-ryu". Although the school's traditions claim to extend back centuries in Japanese history there are no known extant records regarding the ryu before Takeda. Whether he is regarded as the restorer or founder of the art, the known history of Daito-ryu begins with Takeda Sokaku. Perhaps the most famous student of Takeda was Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido.
