BY TORI DeANGELIS The results of several breakthrough studies are offering new insights on gay men, lesbians and bisexuals. Among the key findings: * Several studies suggest that gay men, lesbians and bisexuals appear to have higher rates of some mental disorders compared with heterosexuals, although not to the level of a serious pathology. Discrimination may help fuel these higher rates. * A study found lesbians reported equally strong levels of mental health as their heterosexual sisters and higher self-esteem. * A new study of gay and lesbian youth finds that they are only slightly more likely than heterosexual youth to attempt suicide, refuting previous research that suggested much higher rates. Researchers say these studies demonstrate the need for better, more tailored psychological treatment for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people. This SIECUS Fact Sheet reviews research on sexual orientation during adolescence and presents the available statistics on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students. Many of the studies are regional or local. Much of the research focuses on samples of LGBT youth that are disproportionately at risk. Sexual Self-Concept, Orientation, and Identity Sexual Orientation during Adolescence These statistics are from a report written by the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington that describes several other studies: In Seattle, of 8,406 respondents in the ninth to twelfth grades, 4.5 percent of respondents described themselves as gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB). Ninety-one percent described themselves as heterosexual. Another four percent indicated that they were not sure of their orientations.

Here is some information on program/opportunities in specific countries which was garnered via a few GLBT listservs: Netherlands: School for International Training The School for International Training (SIT) launched the the first-ever undergraduate lesbian, gay and bisexual study abroad program in February, 1994 in the Netherlands. The semester-long program, open to students attending colleges and universities throughout the United States, features interdisciplinary seminars on life and culture of the Netherlands, a country with a long history of tolerance. Faculty from the University of Utrecht and the University of Amsterdam lectured on lesbian, gay and bisexual studies and local activists. Representatives from numerous organizations, including the military and police, will participate as well. There is no ban on openly homosexual personnel among Dutch military or police.
