BlackDog's Father's Day History A look at how and when the observance got started. http://blackdog4kids.com/holiday/dad/history.html
Extractions: Father's Day is a new holiday. The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. It was proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd (Mrs. John B. Dodd) of Washington State in 1909 after attending a Mother's Day service. Mrs. Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, who raised six children after his wife died in childbirth. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed the proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June Father's Day officially in the United States. Even then, the first Presidential Proclamation in 1966 was only for one year. It wasn't until April 24, 1972 that Father's Day was assured annual recognition by Presidential Proclamation.

Extractions: A batch system is one in which jobs are bundled together with the instructions necessary to allow them to be processed without intervention. Often jobs of a similar nature can be bundled together to further increase economy The basic physical layout of the memory of a batch job computer is shown below: The monitor is system software that is responsible for interpreting and carrying out the instructions in the batch jobs. When the monitor started a job, it handed over control of the entire computer to the job, which then controlled the computer until it finished. A sample of several batch jobs might look like: $JOB user_spec ; identify the user for accounting purposes $FORTRAN ; load the FORTRAN compiler source program cards $LOAD ; load the compiled program $RUN ; run the program data cards $EOJ ; end of job $JOB user_spec ; identify a new user $LOAD application $RUN data $EOJ Often magnetic tapes and drums were used to store intermediate data and compiled programs.

Kamat's Potpourri: Sikhism Potpourri Topics on Sikh history and culture; includes a number of pictures and a timeline http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/sikhism
Extractions: more ads Sikhism Potpourri The history and suffering of Sikhs is one of the most important episodes in the history of India. Guru Nanak Dev founded Sikhism in the fifteen century and he was followed by nine Gurus (divine teachers or prophets). Guru Angad developed the Gurumukhi script. Guru Ram Das laid the foundation for the city of Amritsar . Guru Arjan Dev compiled the Adi Granth, the sacred text of Sikhs. But it was Guru Gobind Singh who gave Sikhism a renewed vigor and mass following in the seventeenth century. The principle of Sikhism was that there was but one God, and all men who were servants of God and Guru, and were bound together in a holy brotherhood known as the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh also built the institution of Akalis. The Akalis were fiercely religious devotees soldiers of God. Late in the twentieth century (1970s and 1980s), the Akalis were to wage a bloody fight against the Indian Government that led to massive armed offensive against them. Today, people of Sikh religion can be found all over the world, due to years of persecution in their homeland (in 1738 by Nadir Shah, in 1748 to 1751 by Ahmed Shah Abdadi, by British in 1849, and in 1984 by Government militia) as well as due to their entrepreneur spirit. The Sikhs (or Sardarjis as they are popularly known) have been great patrons of art, religion and scholarship. Along with Rajputs, they are the known as the bravest people in India, and their women, among India's most beautiful. The Sikhs have participated in India's nation building for hundreds of years, fighting the British, serving in the military (the Sikh regiment is the most decorated regiment of the Indian army) and excelling in sports, and even served as the Presidents (Gianni

DEWNANS - CELTIC DEVON Celtic history and culture of Devon, covering ancient Dumnonia, Devon Stannary Parliament, the flag, tin and copper mining, customs, folklore and language. http://www.users.senet.com.au/~dewnans/
Extractions: Devon was the cornerstone of one of Britain's most significant Celtic Kingdoms (Dumnonia), and retains a significant heritage from those days. Devon's people are predominantly of Celtic stock, with the Celtic language (which also resulted in Cornish) being spoken well into the dark ages, and is retained today in place names, dialect, as well as in customs and culture. This is not to say that the Saxons, who 'conquered' Devon in the eight and ninth centuries (and who militarily conquered Cornwall in the ninth and tenth centuries), or the Normans who did the same to the whole of England in the eleventh century, are without merit or contribution. However the point of this web-page is to promote that part of Devon's history which for some strange reason appears to have been repressed - that of Celtic Devon

Perhaps more importantly, our exploration of space has taught us to view Earth, ourselves, and the universe in a new way. Extractions: T hough the Brethren Assemblies at least by the reckoning of some in the places of origin are facing a decline of sorts, the situation is totally different in the Far East, including India. In fact the NT Pattern church in India is a vibrant one, having a large number of outreaches, with scores of new churches established every year, and this church history of Far East is incomplete without an account of the origin and growth of the Brethren Assemblies in India. The Christian faith came to India in AD 50 when Saint Thomas the doubting disciples came here with the gospel. He received a warm welcome from Hindu kings and nobles and soon many professed faith in Christ, and an active community of Christians came into existence in India in the middle of the first century AD. This community kept growing and soon there were churches all over the southern and western parts of India. This was an educated community of people, as opposed to the general illiteracy, and had business links with many countries. Many non Indian Christians also moved to India and merged into this mainstream, making it a culturally rich community.
