    Extractions: and itinerant printers This book tells the history of printing from the viewpoint of those wandering craftsmen and masters of the art of printing who spread the "art preservative of all arts" throughout the world, and who continued the tradition of mobility throughout the centuries, until abruptly, in the latter half of the 20th century, their skills were no longer needed. Printers were replaced by computers. From earliest days of America's history, the skills of those who worked with handset type, the printing press and the linotype were much in demand. For three centuries until computerized new processes signaled the end of the "hot type" era traveling printers were a tradition on newspapers and print shops around the United States and Canada. Most belonged to unions, often very strong and militant. Many printers worked in "country" printing plants where unions were unknown. But union or not, printers had a proclivity for travel. Their skills were not easily learned, but once acquired could be easily transferred from one newspaper or print shop to another. And travel they did. Some traveled from job to job, from town to town, so often they became known as "tramp" printers. The free and independent lifestyles they enjoyed were envied by other workers wherever tramp printers wandered. They were the epitome of Robert Service's poem "A Race of Men:"

The records indicate that the various families with the name cannot be traced to a single ancestor. However, it is noted that practically all of the originating lines are from villages in the Linth River Valley, the central valley of Glarus: I have dated significant events listed in the archive that establish a presence in each area. In some cases, a family line is known to have ended, as shown by a date to the right of the respective line. References to "Glarus" refer to the village that is the center city of the canton, not the canton itself. The connection between the lines in Näfels and Mollis is a guess, but logical since these two villages are directly across the river from each other. Even though there is no common ancestor of record for all the lineages, it is assumed that one did exist. The archive information only seems to have recorded information on branches through about 1930, and ignores emigrations outside Switzerland. Here's some of the other moves that I have detected:

    Extractions: St. Patrick was born about 390 AD in Roman Britain. As a youth he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped six years later and fled to Gaul. After several years of monastic life, he returned to Ireland in 432 AD as a missionary to the people there. Legend has it that he drove all of the snakes out of the country. It is said that he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity; hence its strong association with his day and name. St. Patrick is a hero in Ireland. In fact, there are about 60 churches and cathedrals named for him in Ireland alone. One of the most famous cathedrals is St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. These grounds bear the mark of the place where St. Patrick baptized his converts. Green is associated with Saint Patrick's Day because it is the color of spring, Ireland, and the shamrock. Leprechauns are also associated with this holiday. According to the legend, the Leprechaun is an Irish fairy. It is told that Leprechauns are unsociable, unfriendly, live alone. Also, they make shoes and possess a hidden pot of gold. The legend says if the Leprechaun is caught by a treasure hunter then he must tell where is treasure is, unless the Leprechaun can trick the hunter and vanish They were probably added later on because greeting card compaines needed something cute to put on their greeting cards.
