Extractions: Museum of Cretan Ethnology - Vori The Museum of Cretan Ethnology in Vori is an institution of the Cultural Association of the Province of Messara. It was erected between 1977-1982 and opened its doors to the public in 1988. Its construction was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and by members and friends of the Association. The exhibited objects in the Museum come from all over Crete. These objects show that the folk culture of Crete is characterized by an amalgam of influences in which Minoan (2000-1000 BC), Archaic (1000-500 BC) and Byzantine models prevail, especially in agriculture, stock breeding, pottery and basketry. Most of the objects exhibited in the Museum date from the period of Turkish occupation. Their stark simplicity reflects the economic degradation. However the Byzantine tradition is preserved, wherever possible, as in the designs of traditional woven fabrics, in wood caving, architecture, and of course in music, dancing, singing and language.

Extractions: Founding of the Museum: The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in 1888 and is the oldest among the modern cultural and scientific institutions of Western type in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A line of historical events influenced its establishment. A number of individuals and groups had for a long time prior to its founding emphasized the need for such an institution. The first idea of founding of the museum dates back to 1850. However, nearly four decades passed from the idea to its realization. Two empires ruled over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the meantime - the Ottoman rule gave way to the Austro-Hungarian one. The political, strategic and economic goals set by the Austro-Hungarian administration required the European level of literacy and a more widespread education. As one of the still unexplored countries of the Balkans, Bosnia and Herzegovina was a source of curiosity for many scientists, especially those from Austria-Hungary. At the same time, it also attracted the attention of quasi-scientists, which in the very first years of occupation resulted in their taking away of the monuments of culture from the region. This all contributed to the decision to take more concrete measures with a view to realizing of the long existing idea to found a museum. Thus, the Museum Society was formed and thereupon the National Government founded the National Museum for Bosnia and Herzegovina on February 1st 1888. The adviser to the Government, Mr. Kosta Hörmann, was appointed as director of the Museum.

Photo by Adelaide deMenil The term Totem Pole refers to the tall cedar poles with multiple figures carved by Native people of the northern Northwest Coast. Several different types of monumental poles include: house frontal poles placed against the house front, often serving as doorways of houses; carved interior house posts that support roof beams, and free standing memorial poles placed in front of houses to honor deceased chiefs. Mortuary poles made in the nineteenth century housed the coffins of important people in a niche at the top. Carved of red cedar logs, the figures on totem poles are inherited crests, which identify the pole owners and tell their family histories. Although totem poles have become a symbol of all Northwest Coast Native people and their use has spread to neighboring tribes through the years, tall multiple-figure poles were first made only by the northern Northwest Coast Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian peoples in Southeast Alaska and British Columbia in the early 1800s. Large free-standing human welcome figures and interior house posts were made by the Kwakwak'wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth people further south, and the Coast Salish people in Southern British Columbia and western Washington also carved large human figures representing ancestors and spirit helpers on interior house posts and as grave monuments.

Since then the collection has grown to over 3500 objects, with over half of the materials from North and Central America. Objects from South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania are included as well. The Collection spans an approximate 100+ year period, from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. They represent horticultural, pastoral, and hunting-gathering peoples living in semi-arid environments. The Collecion consists of two types: Systematic Collections generated by field work with associated documentation, and Synoptic Collections generated by donations and purcahses with little or minimal documentation. Three field-generated collections - the Cordry, the Yaqui, and the Qashqa'i - form the core of the Ethnology Collection. A number of smaller collections generated by individuals also have significant research, exhibit, and educational value because of the donors/collectors' meticulous notes and subsequent research-generated information. At present, about 300 students are studying European Ethnology as a major or minor subject. While initially European Ethnology in Freiburg had a philological emphasis on oral tradition (e.g. fairy tales, legends, fables) it has since then developed a Cultural Anthropological perspective on Europe. Our present emphasis in teaching and research is on the understanding and structuring of time, every day life and traditional feasts, religious life in an increasingly secularised society, ethnicity, migration and the study of primary needs such as food, dwelling, clothing, and sexuality in different cultures. Our lecturers are Prof. Dr. Max Matter, Prof. Dr. Werner Mezger, Prof. Dr. Andreas Kuntz, Dr. Sabine Zinn-Thomas and Lars Kabel, M.A. Claudia Gessler is our secretary. It is our aim to make anthropological knowledge available for a wider public. The results of recent research in South West Germany are presented in public talks and through the mass media. In addition, we offer advice in matters of intercultural communication to authorities and institutions. For example, the Institute carried out a study for the advisory council for immigrants' affairs of the City of Freiburg on how to improve their public relations work. A number of recommendations have already been put into effect.
