With 25 academic and academic-related staff, CPS represents the largest research group in Britain concerned with demography, reproductive health research, and related disciplines. Population Studies is a multidisciplinary research area at the intersection of the mathematical sciences, the health and social sciences, and public policy. Traditionally, the field has been associated with demography, which is concerned with changes in population size, distribution, and structure due to births, deaths, and migration. In recent decades, the scope of population research has greatly expanded to include such topics as fertility and family planning; morbidity and access to health care; demographic transitions; mortality; mobility, migration, and immigration; household and family composition; the life course; schooling; poverty and economic welfare; the aged; minorities; economic development; labor markets and labor force composition; social stratification; urbanization; and population growth, density, and distribution. What can I do with a minor in Population Studies? Training and certification in Population Studies is applicable in many areas. Extractions: Introduction The graduate groups are responsible for training students through course work and supervised research. Faculty research in Demography is carried out within the Population Studies Center, which is administered by the Center Director. All members of the Graduate Group in Demography are also Research Associates of the Population Studies Center, but the Center also includes many affiliates from other departments at Penn and nearby universities. The Graduate Group in Demography and the Population Studies Center together comprise the core elements of Penn's Demography program. Demography has a long and proud tradition at Penn, and students seeking to specialize in it have an unusually broad array of courses from which to pick and a relatively large number of faculty members with whom they can work. Penn is unique in having professors who teach and conduct research within virtually all substantive areas of population. Students specializing in Demography are expected to be conversant with the fundamental methods of Demography and the basic substantive and theoretical issues before the field. Students and faculty in the Population Studies Center carry out a varied program of population research. The Center provides office and work space for faculty and student associates and maintains a Demography library, and a fully-staffed computing center and data library. Many students secure direct research experience by participating in Center research projects. The Center sponsors a weekly seminar series and informal sessions where students meet and talk with visiting scholars. The Population Aging Research Center, a component of the Population Studies Center, offers seminars, a working paper series, and other specialized opportunities in demography of aging.

Extractions: Summer Institute for Demographic Research Application Due Date: March 25, 2005 The Population Studies Center at the University of Pennsylvania, under a grant from the Mellon Foundation, is offering a summer program consisting of a six-week introduction to population studies for currently enrolled undergraduate students. The purpose of the program is to improve the human resource base in the field of demography and to reinforce the ethnic diversity of that human resource base. Demography, in general, is the study of how and why populations change. The population under study may include college students in Canada, international migrants in U.S., or married couples in Kenya. Research within the field of demography is equally diverse and may involve analysis of the changing racial composition of the prison population in the U.S., determinants of under-weight births to mothers in Philadelphia, the fertility rate in Eastern European countries, or the number of deaths due to malaria in Ghana. This is a broad and exciting field within the social sciences. The Institute is for students who want to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to engage in this type of demographic analysis. Such skills are in demand increasingly in academic, corporate, and governmental settings. This program may also benefit students whose educational goal is an advanced degree in demography or sociology with an emphasis in population studies. Students who choose this program should have an aptitude for mathematics. Depending on your background in mathematics a semester of calculus is desirable, but not absolutely essential. Students should also be familiar with economics.

The program in Population Studies prepares undergraduate students for careers requiring demographic skills or for entering graduate programs in related areas. The program is not a major in itself. It requires 15 semester hours of coursework, some of which may satisfy other University and major requirements. Applications of demographic analysis to the problems of human ecology are illustrated in the preparation of population estimates and forecasts, family planning, aging, migration, marriage and family structure, labor markets, gender and environmental impact analysis, as well as the academic study of communities. Successful completion of the program leads to a Certificate in Population Studies attesting to a special competence in the application of demographic skills in solving problems in population-environment relations. The certificate requirements cover introductory work in population, culture and society, and population and human ecology; then, preparation in demographic methods leads to a choice of coursework offered by members of the participating faculty listed above. Work on the certificate concludes with a seminar in the senior year. The Population Methods Course (SOC 363) satisfies the analytic reasoning requirement (R2) in the General Education program. Students enrolling in this course are expected to have a score of 20 on the Mathematics Placement Test (or its equivalent). In the course of their studies, students are urged to gain familiarity with a computing package such as EXCEL, QUARTRO PRO or STATA, any of which may be used in their coursework.
