Extractions: contact aps The Panel on Public Affairs (POPA) advises the Council and officers of the Society in the formulation of APS positions on public policy issues that have a technical dimension of interest to physicists. POPA also investigates the desirability of APS-sponsored expert studies on physics-related topics of importance to society and helps to organize such studies. Topics in defense technology, energy, and environment have been among the subjects of past studies. POPA was organized in 1974 in response to members' growing interest in societal issues. In addition to the chair, chair-elect, vice-chair and past-chair, its 15 members are elected by the APS Council for staggered three-year terms.
