CSA's aim is to encourage appropriate uses of computers and information technology by those involved in research in archaeology and architectural history - and those who will need the fruits of that research. The key word is appropriate. Particularly in these early stages of the digital era it is not easy to know how best to use the new computing power that has become available to us. Nor is it obvious which computers or computer technologies will turn out to be the best and most appropriate for a given use. Perhaps most important, it is all but impossible to predict which specific approaches to using computers to create digital information will thrive and which will turn out to have been dead ends. It is CSA's mission to help guide users and potential users of information technologies so that, at the least, they can make well-considered choices of computers and software in these poorly charted waters. Introduction History is one of the strongest subject areas at the college both in the number of staff and students and in the quality of its work. It was the first subject offered as a main subject in an Honours degree programme in 1976. Each year since then history has proved most successful, and, as well as having a large number of undergraduate students, we also possess an expanding number of postgraduate students. We currently have two Masters degree programmes (in Local and Regional History and Archaeology and in Social History) and, since 1993, a community of MPhil and PhD students. At the last Research Assessment Exercise History obtained a 4 rating, the highest in the college. History is part of the School of Social Sciences and all students who graduate currently have their degrees accredited by the University of Southampton although from the 2005 entry we will start to award our own degrees.

(left) [LARGER IMAGE] [LARGER IMAGE] (Courtesy Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations) Dikman's participation in the depredation of Cypriot heritage in the occupied part of the island was suspected as early as 1982. He kept a low profile, however, working through dealers and seldom meeting directly with those who purchased items from him. Whether out of fear of retribution or unwillingness to jeopardize potential future acquisitions, those who knew that he was selling looted artworks from northern Cyprus did not reveal his identity to authorities. It was not until 1989 that the extent of his role became somewhat clearer through testimony in the Goldberg case, a legal battle in federal court in Indianapolis over Byzantine mosaics from Cyprus. That nearly nine years passed from Dikman's exposure in the Goldberg case to his arrest in 1997 is a troubling commentary on the lack of a concerted international effort to end the destruction and trafficking in Cyprus' heritage. Speaking after Dikman's arrest, Athanassios Papageorgiou, an expert in Byzantine art who works for the Cypriot church, told Reuters, "We have managed to catch the mastermind of the whole smuggling operation." A chronology of what is known of Dikman's activities over the past two decades suggests that his role was a central one.

The settlement boasted a population of over 1400 Apalachee Indians who resided at the hilltop mission center and in surrounding hamlets and farmsteads. San Luis was also the residence of a lieutenant governor, military garrison and their families, friars and civilians. Except for a few Spanish cattle ranchers scattered across the landscape, colonists lived near the center of San Luis in a community described by one chronicler as having the appearance of a small Spanish city. Map of La Florida showing location of San Luis. he fertile soils of Apalachee made it one of colonial Florida's prized provinces. Corn, wheat, hides, tallow and other agricultural products were regularly shipped to St. Augustine and Havana resulting in economic prosperity that allowed San Luis colonists to enjoy a relatively comfortable lifestyle. However, raids by the British and their Creek Indian allies had a devastating effect on the missions. Facing the certainty of future attacks that would end in death or enslavement, the Spaniards and remaining Apalachees decided to evacuate San Luis just two days before a strike force reached it on July 31, 1704. uckily, San Luis's location was never lost. Shortly after the Spanish colony of La Florida was ceded to the United States (1819), American territorial officials visited San Luis and recorded descriptions of the ruins. Later, the site became part of an 800 acre ante-bellum plantation named appropriately - San Luis. Although the site passed through a number of owners during the next century, San Luis remained fixed in the minds of the local Tallahassee residents. From 1939 until 1983, the site was a residential estate of a locally prominent family and protected from archaeological vandals.
