Extractions: Geometric Unfoldings of a Difference Equation Introduction by UVic Site Director of PIMS Dr. Florin Diacu: My name is Florin Diacu and I am the UVic-Site Director of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences. It is an honour for me to introduce our PIMS Distinguished Lecturer, Professor Sir Christopher Zeeman. Sir Christopher's name is known not only to every mathematician around the world but to many researchers in other fields and to members of the general public as well. During his career, he managed to combine his rare mathematic ability with his insight in other fields of knowledge, to mix his gift for writing with his oratorial talent, and to use his diplomatic skills in his leadership posts. Sir Christopher studied at Christ's College in Cambridge where he received his doctoral degree in 1953 and where he started his teaching career as a Lecturer. In 1964 he was appointed by then the recently established University of Warwick in Coventry. There he led the setting up of the Department and of the Mathematics Research Centre. Largely due to Sir Christopher's contribution, mathematics at Warwick received international reputation. 24 years later, in 1988, Sir Christopher left Warwick, where he had been made Honourary Professor, to become Principal at Hertford College in Oxford and Gresham Professor of Geometry at Gresham College in London. He retired from Gresham in 1994 and from his position of Principal in 1995.

It is not directly visible from the Earth . To the northwest of Zeeman lies the Numerov crater. Southeast of the rim is the Ashbrook crater The outer rim of Zeeman is eroded somewhat irregular, considreable variation in width of the inner slopes. The crater 'Zeeman Y' lies across the northern wall, reaching almost to the relatively flat interior floor. In the western rim is a small crater than joins a gash that runs down to the floor. The surface of the interior is pock-marked by many tiny craterlets, and worn crater features. There is a low central rise, offset to the southeast of the interior mid-point. By convention these features are identified on Lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Zeeman crater.
