Extractions: Nein, nein, dieser Begriff sollte schon etwas über seine eigentliche Bedeutung aussagen. In der Vorlesung hatte ich einige Probleme zu erklären, warum mir das Wort "Kinder" in diesem Zusammenhang eigentlich ganz natürlich erscheint. Denn ich verwende ganz systematisch eine Vielzahl solcher Vokabel wie "Nachkomme", "Vorfahre" usw. In meiner Vorlesung ging es in diesem Augenblick um einen Aspekt, der in gewisser Weise etwas mit "Abstammung" ganz allgemein zu tun hatte. Die Mathematiker neigen eher dazu, den Wörtern der Alltagssprache einen ganz speziellen, sehr technischen Sinn zu verleihen. Unser Vokabular ist also der ganz alltäglichen Sprache entlehnt und hat im Bereich der Mathematik seine eigene Bedeutung angenommen, wie beispielsweise die Begriffe "Gruppe" oder "Körper". In diesem Zusammenhang sehe ich auch die Bezeichnung "einfache Kinder". Das ist eine Wortschöpfung, ein Terminus, den ich zwei Vorlesungen zuvor eingeführt hatte. Alle, die meine Vorlesungen regelmäßig besuchen, wussten also sehr genau, was damit gemeint war. Wenn man natürlich unvorbereitet dazukommt, wirkt das alles höchst seltsam!

Fields avait précisé dans son legs que, s'il s'agissait de reconnaître un travail déjà effectué, la médaille devait être également un encouragement à réaliser d'autres progrès en mathématiques. C'est ainsi que la coutume s'imposa de décerner la médaille à des mathématiciens "jeunes", c'est-à-dire d'au plus 40 ans. Si Serre a eu directement peu d'élèves, il a eu une influence considérable sur de très nombreux jeunes mathématiciens. Par ses "cours aux carrés", à l'ENS et à l'ENSJF. Et par ses cours au Collège de France, pour les chercheurs plus avancés, qui furent, pendant des lustres, un rendez-vous hebdomadaire important en mathématiques.
