He became the Gresham Professor of Astronomy in London in 1657, and later the Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford. In 1663, he was asked to design a new chapel for Pembroke College, Cambridge. This, his first foray into architecture, was quickly followed by more commissions. London's Great Fire of 1666 gave Wren a chance to present a scheme to rebuild the city. In 1669 Charles II appointed Wren Surveyor General of the King's Works. In this capacity, he supervised all work on the royal palaces. In 1673 Wren resigned his Oxford professorship because of the workload. He was also knighted in 1673. Wren died in London in 1723. Born in East Knoyle, Wiltshire, on October 20, 1632, Sir Christopher Wren is considered by many to be the greatest British architect of all time. The sheer breadth and vision of his work has made its presence felt for more than three centuries and has helped define the London we know today. The fact that Wren's legacy rests almost entirely upon his architectural work is somewhat surprising considering that it was not until 1663 that he designed his first building. The meeting place or 'Guild Hall' would have been the 'Three Tuns' next door, which dates from around 1518. The merchant and craft guilds were important to the running of the town and its trade from the earliest days. A merchant guild was in existence by 1268 and would have been involved in negotiations for the granting of Windsor's first Charter on 28th May 1277. The Charter meant that Windsor was no longer administered by the Constable of the Castle, but became a free Borough, responsible for managing its own affairs.
