Extractions: Version for printing Adriaan van Roomen is often known by his Latin name Adrianus Romanus. After studying at the Jesuit College in Cologne, Roomen studied medicine at Louvain. He then spent some time in Italy, particularly with Clavius in Rome in 1585. One of Roomen's most impressive results was finding p to 16 decimal places. He did this in 1593 using 2 sided polygons. Roomen's interest in p was almost certainly as a result of his friendship with Ludolph van Ceulen Roomen proposed a problem which involved solving an equation of degree 45. The problem was solved by who realised that there was an underlying trigonometric relation. After this a friendship grew up between the two men. proposed the problem of drawing a circle to touch 3 given circles to Roomen (the Apollonian Problem) and Roomen solved it using hyperbolas , publishing the result in 1596.

Extractions: Chapter 4 Influence on Other Geometers The influence Jesuits had on other geometers is treated under two headings: a. In teaching other geometers b. In correspondence with other geometers a In teaching other geometers Apart from the direct contributions to geometry, the Jesuits indirectly influenced its development by their relations with non-Jesuit geometers. They did this as teachers, as relatives, as friends, as correspondents, and as adversaries. Gilbert Highet speaks about the Jesuit educational experience in the years before the suppression of the Society. The best thing about its method was the thoroughness with which they planned. . . .The Jesuit regulations made sure that the pupils realized what they were doing, and why. It is noticeable that very many of their pupils have turned out to be men of very strong will-power and long vision. A good modern example is the Irishman who spent seven years on writing a book about the events of a single day, and then spent seventeen more on writing about the dreams of a single night. Extractions: Simon Stevin, Flemish tutor of a Dutch Prince Portrait of Stevin (Library of the University of Leiden (The Netherlands)) To a general educated public Simon Stevin is mainly associated with the introduction of the decimal fractions, which laid later on to the foundation of the decimal system of weights and measures. He realised a lot of technical inventions out of which the construction of a 28-passenger sailing carriage used along the seashore was best known to his contemporaries. For those less familiar with Stevin we recall that he is born in Brugge (now Belgium ) in 1548 as the illegitimate child of Anthuenis (Anton) Stevin and Catelyne (Catherine) van der Poort . Recent studies proves that his father could be a cadet son of a burgomaster (mayor) of Veurne ; his mother was the daughter of a burgher family of Ieper Ypres ), who married later on a merchant in carpet-weaving and silk-trade, who belonged to a family with sympathy for the Calvinism religion. Practically nothing more is known of Stevin's youth and education. He was at first employed in

Bhaskara (fi. f 150) used the method, to which we have now returned, of expressing sines and cosines as fractions of the radius; he obtained the more correct values sin 3 45 = 100/1529, cos 3 45 =466/467, and showed how to form a table, according to degrees, from the values sin 1 = 10/573, cos f=6568/6569, which are much more acctirate than Ptolemys values. The Indians did not apply their trigonometrical knowledge to the solution of triangles; for astronomical purposes they solved right-angled plane and spherical triangles by geometry. The Arabs were acquainted with Ptolemys Almagest, and they probably learned from the Indians the use of the sine. The celebrated astronomer of Batnae, Albategnius (q.v), who died in A.D. 929930, and whose Tables were translated in the 12th century by Plato of Tivoli into Latin, under the title Dc scientia stellarum, employed the sine regularly, and was fully conscious of the advantage of the sine over the chord; indeed, he remarks that the continual doubling is saved by the use of the former. He was the first to calculate sin ~ from the equation sin ~/cos 4=k, and he also made a table of the length of shadows of a vertical object of height 12 for altitudes 1, 2, . . . of the sun; this is a sort of cotangent table. He was acquainted not only with the triangle formulae in the Almagest, but also with the formula cos a=cos b cos c + sin b sin c cos A for a spherical triangle ABC. Abul-Wafg of Bagdad (b. 940) was the first to introduce the tangent as an independent function:
