Extractions: Northern Arizona University Textbook authors and classroom teachers need to make corresponding changes in approaches to L2 teaching, since the limitations imposed by the textbook and the classroom on pragmatically appropriate input hinder the learner from becoming truly proficient in communicating in the target language (Koike, 1989, p. 287). Despite its shortcomings, the textbook is considered to be the most important tool used in the classroom (Altbach, 1991). Connections between the textbooks and language use, curriculum and lesson planning in the classroom need to be established for a more complete description of the use of ELT textbooks. Drawing on previous studies of pragmatics in textbooks, the current study was undertaken to see what kinds of pragmatically relevant input and explicit metapragmatic information was provided in ELT textbooks. Harvey Instruments Donation Improving Vaccination Protocol For The Elderly Researching protective immunity Dr. Laura Haynes received her Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, where she studied T lymphocyte derived cytokines from the clawed toad, Xenopus laevis. Cytokines are small molecules that are produced by cells of the immune system. Since they serve to mediate interactions between cell populations, cytokines play an important role during an immune response. As a post-doctoral fellow with Susan Swain, Ph.D., at the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Haynes continued to study T lymphocyte-derived cytokines, this time in a mouse model. In collaboration with researchers at the Scripps Research Institute, she began to examine how age affects the production of cytokines by T lymphocytes. She found that naive CD4 T lymphocytes from aged animals produce reduced levels of the cytokine interleukin-2 (IL-2) upon initial stimulation. Production of adequate levels of IL-2 is critical for the proper function of helper CD4 T lymphocytes, which, in turn, direct and regulate the responses of other lymphocyte populations.
