Her mathematical books and papers fared less well and remained interned for several years before eventually being returned. Lamb . While in Manchester she published her first paper, a joint paper with Lamb . As planned, she returned to Newnham College in 1915 to take up her lecturing post. However World War I again affected her career since she now undertook war work at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. The war work she undertook was related to her expertise in fluids, and she worked on problem of vibration of propellers of aircraft. Her work was written up jointly with H A Webb and appeared as a Report of the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1919. In 1920 Swain was appointed Director of Studies at Newnham College. Extractions: Braille Converters Invaluable, Says Lorna Joy Swain Recently on the TESL-L listserv, there was a query posted regarding ideas and innovations for teaching English to visually impaired ESL students. Lorna Joy Swain, of Contra Costa College, in California, has graciously agreed to share with the readers of the ESL MiniConference Online the suggestions she offered in response to this question. (See also a related article on Post-It Index Tabs) ESL teachers who are working with blind or partially sighted students should contact their campus "Disabled Students Services" or similar campus organization if one exists. At the College of Alameda (California) our DSPS group can provide equipment for a sighted person to use to type in text and have it converted to braille. They may even provide the conversion service for the teacher; I'm not sure. They also have a tremendously nifty thermal machine that works like a photocopier, but what it produces is a page that has the original information raised. By using this machine, a teacher could produce, for example, a map or diagram that the blind or visually impaired student could "read" by touch. Teachers can also contact local associations for the blind to see what services they offer. Here is one:

She has taught in intensive English programs at the Florida Institute of Technology, the University of San Francisco, and UC Berkeley Extension, as well as in non-intensive programs in the San Francisco Community College District and at CCC (since 1996). She has also written and edited ESL teaching materials and conducted teacher training workshops in California and throughout Japan. In addition to teaching, Helen has worked as an acquisitions/development editor for various ESL publishers in New York and California, and continues to score essays for the Educational Testing Service. Her interests include aerobics, jazz piano, reading, and vipassana meditation, and she is still struggling to learn Chinese. Ellen Rosenfield has been working in the English as a Second Language field for 30 years. She began her ESL teaching career at Merritt College, where she taught writing classes to undergraduates. In 1974 she joined the faculty at UC Berkeley Extension's English Language Program, and she has been working there ever since. At the English Language Program, she's had the opportunity to be a teacher, curriculum designer, and academic coordinator. In 1997, she won UC Extension's honored teacher award. Besides working at the English Language Program, Ellen has worked in Brazil on a textbook writing project, has taught writing in what is now UC Berkeley's College Writing Program, and has taught teacher training courses at UC Extension. After all these years, she is still enjoying teaching ESL to international students at UC Berkeley and at Contra Costa College.
