Once the domain of only large scale installations that could afford the expensive CTI applications, today CTI applications including Unified Messaging and computer control of call processing are mainstream. Come hear from our panelists of long term users of these features, why CTI is no longer a nice to have add on, but an integral part of how their organizations communicate! With its massive steel frame sprouting dozens of arms with needles at the ends, it resembles a spaceship as envisioned by H.G. Wells. And this space-age behemoth could knit like nobody's business. On a clear March day, in the basement of a turn-of-the-century building in Port Richmond, sunlight spills on about a dozen of these circular knitting machines, glistening with white thread. A thin layer of fuzz sits on the mechanisms, and some of the engraved text on the body is worn away. It's as if the whole operation is stopped in time. But the years have been relatively kind to the Oliver Knitting Company buildings, two brick structures on a stretch of Amber Street in Port Richmond that were once home to, among others, the Oliver family's hosiery business, a carpet manufacturer and textile outfits over the course of the last 120 years. Earliest Uses Of Symbols Of Operation And Grouping According to Lucas, michael stifel (1487 or 1486 1567) first showed multiplicationby juxtaposition in 1544 in Arithmetica integra. http://www.veling.nl/anne/templars/operation.html
Extractions: Earliest Uses of Symbols of Operation and Grouping Last revision: Aug. 15, 1997 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION SYMBOLS Plus (+) and minus (-). The plus symbol as an abbreviation for the Latin et (and), though appearing with the downward stroke not quite vertical, was found in a manuscript dated 1417 (Cajori). The + and - symbols first appeared in print in Mercantile Arithmetic or Behende und hubsche Rechenung auff allen Kauffmanschafft , by Johannes Widmann (born c. 1460), published in Leipzig in 1489. However, they referred not to addition or subtraction or to positive or negative numbers, but to surpluses and deficits in business problems (Cajori vol. 1, page 128). Cajori says, "There is clear evidence that, as a lecturer at the University of Leipzig, Widmann had studied manuscripts in the Dresden library in which + and - signify operations, some of these having been written as early as 1486." Johnson (page 144) says a series of notes from 1481, annotated by Widmann, contain the + and - symbols, and he asks whether Widman could have copied these symbols from some unknown professor at the University of Leipzig. Johnson also says that a student's notes from one of Widmann's 1486 lectures show the + and - signs.

The Number Of The Beast: A Numerological Primer michael stifel (14871567, better known for introducing modern symbols foraddition, subtraction, and square root) proved that Pope Leo X (lived 1475-1521, http://www.merriampark.com/numbeast.htm
Extractions: Appendix 2: Significant Numbers in Literary Works Our starting point is the last verse of the 13th chapter of the last book of the Bible (Revelation 13:18). In the King James Version, this verse reads: Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred, three score and six. Scholars of every persuasion are almost unanimous in interpreting the beast in this passage to be the Antichrist. For practically every verse in the Bible, manuscripts offer variant readings, and this verse is no exception. One of the variants in this verse is the actual number of the beast. While most manuscripts read 666, some read 616 instead. We'll look at one possible explanation of this discrepancy below. Before the discovery and widespread use of what we call Arabic numerals (0123456789), letters of the alphabet did double duty as numbers. It is this twofold function (letters serving as numbers, as well as letters) that lies behind the pseudo-science of numerology, known also as gematria (in Hebrew), isopsephia (in Greek), and abjad (in Arabic).

Pascal Triangle-History 1544 The German mathematician michael stifel publishes the extended FigurateTriangle in the figure shown below. stifel gives credit to Cardano s work http://milan.milanovic.org/math/english/fibo/fibo0.html
Extractions: Pascal Triangle - History There are some proofs that this number triangle was familiar to the Arab astronomer, poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam as early as the XI century. Most probably the number triangle came to Europe from China through Arabia. The Chinese representation of the binomial coefficients, often equally called Pascal`s Triangle being found in his work published for the first time after his death ( in 1665 ) and dealing with figurate numbers, is found for the first time on the title page of the European Arithmetic written by Appianus, in 1527. Blaise Pascal was not the first man in Europe to study the binomial coefficients, and never claimed to be such; indeed, both Blaise Pascal and his father Etienne had been in correspondence with Father Marin Mersenne, who published a book with a table of binomial coefficients in 1636. Many authors discussed the ideas with respect to expansions of binomials, answers to combinatorial problems and figurate numbers, numbers relating to figures such as triangles, squares, tetrahedra and pyramids.
Extractions: The life of Christopher Reeve has served as a perfect illustration of the evolution that occurs within a person who has experienced a life-changing disability. Together, we watched a man go from a Hollywood hero who had it all, to a quadriplegic contemplating the value of life and now, to a self-described disability advocate. Through his work with the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation and the Christopher Reeve Resource Center, Reeve has proved that finding a cure and the promotion of quality of life issues need not be mutually exclusive. David E. Kelley: The genesis of this was Christopher himself. He came up with a storyline he thought would be viable to The Practice and submitted it to me. I read it, responded favorably to it and we spoke. He actually did a treatment for it and then I went about writing it with the hopes that he would be available to actually act in it. He was, so it all worked out.
