Other descriptions of Juliusz Schauder ) was a Polish mathematician Born on September 21 in Lwów , he had to fight in World War I right after his graduation from school. He was captured and imprisoned in Italy . He entered the university in Lwów in 1919 and received his doctorate in 1923. He got no appointment at the university and continued his research while working as teacher at a secondary school. Due to his outstanding results, he obtained a scholarship in 1932 that allowed him to spend several years in Leipzig and, especially, Paris. In Paris he started a very successful collaboration with Jean Leray . After the beginning of World War II he was finally appointed professor in Lwów.

Steinhaus (in article published in Wiadom. Mat. in 1969), Orlicz wrote Selected Problems of Functional Analysis '' until 1989. Seminar went on every Wednesday at half past twelve in the Mathematical Institute. Orlicz was interested in works of other mathematicians and in branches far from the functional analysis. He addressed to participants of his seminar and other interlocutors using characteristic phrase: Orlicz collaborated with several mathematicians. Collaboration with Mazur was especially fruitful. They wrote a dozen of joint papers and their results are among classical theorems. When in 1960 Hugo Steinhaus was writing about Banach he emphasised that (cf. Extractions: Bogdan Ziemian (1953 - 1997) The authors would like to thank the colleagues of Bogdan Ziemian for their remarks that helped to improve the text. The mainstream of Bogdan Ziemian's research was focused on differential equations. He introduced new original methods in this field, based on a widely understood mathematical analysis: Lie groups, complex analysis, functional analysis, distributions and hyperfunctions. Bogdan Ziemian was gifted with great analytical and geometrical intuition and imagination. His ability to see known facts from entirely new perspectives resulted in many surprising, but at the same time fruitful and simple ideas. Discovering links between mathematical theories which used to be treated separately is one of the most characteristic features of his research. Much of his work in the theory of distributions and integral transformations was devoted to creating a mathematical apparatus to study singular partial differential equations, the principal focus of his research. Developing these tools often required overcoming considerable technical difficulties. This is particularly evident in the papers [ ], and in closely related work[

The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth , known for its religious tolerance as a "Jewish paradise", attracted numerous Jews who fled persecution from other European countries. Poland soon became a major spiritual and cultural center for Ashkenazi Jewry, and Polish Jews contributed strongly to Polish cultural, economic and political life. By the Second World War Poland had the largest Jewish population in the world (about 3 million), the vast majority of whom were killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust. We give two homotopic (topological) definitions of this number in general situations, based on the approaches of Wecken and Nielsen, respectively, and we discuss why these definitions do not coincide and correspond to two completely different approaches to coincidence theory. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 47H11, 47H09, 47H10, 47H04, 47J05, 54H25.
