Extractions: Map History Gateway The earliest seeds of visualization arose in geometric diagrams, in tables of the positions of stars and other celestial bodies, and in the making of maps to aid in navigation and exploration. We list only a few of these here to provide some early context against which later developments can be viewed. In the 16th century, techniques and instruments for precise observation and measurement of physical quantities were well-developed. As well, we see initial ideas for capturing images directly, and recording mathematical functions in tables. These early steps comprise the beginnings of the husbandry of visualization. Extractions: On April 12, 1615, Cardinal Roberto Bellarmine, the leading Catholic theologian, wrote an often-quoted letter to Paolo Antonio Foscarini, a Carmelite monk from Naples who had published a tract defending the Copernican system. Bellarmines letter, which was obviously intended as much for Galileo as for Foscarini, opened on a conciliatory note: "For to say that assuming the earth moves and the sun stands still saves all the appearances better than eccentrics and epicycles is to speak well. . . . But to affirm that the sun is really fixed in the center of the heavens and that the earth revolves very swiftly around the sun is a dangerous thing, not only irritating the theologians and philosophers, but by injuring our holy faith and making the sacred scripture false"[1]. Bellarmine made very clear that he was unwilling to concede the motion of the earth in the absence of an apodictic proof when he added, "If there were a true demonstration, then it would be necessary to be very careful in explaining Scriptures that seemed contrary, but I do not think there is any such demonstration, since none has been shown to me. To demonstrate that the appearances are saved by assuming that the sun is at the center is not the same thing as to demonstrate that in fact the sun is in the center and the earth in the heavens." His monumental treatise

Copernicus: Biography A professor of mathematics at the University of Wittenberg, georg JoachimRheticus (15141574) who was on a tour of visiting distinguished scholars, http://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/starry/copernicus.html
Extractions: Personalities Tour (Next) Previous Copernicus Tour (Next) Copernicus Pages General Pages Home Index Regarded as one of the central figures of the so-called Scientific Revolution, Copernicus (1473-1543) postulated a heliostatic theory in his De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (1543). He did, however, maintain that planetary orbits were circular, and many believed that his system did not reflect the physical universe. Born in Torun, Poland, in 1473, Copernicus first studied astronomy and astrology at the University of Cracow (1491-94). Through his uncle, Lukas Watzenrode (1447-1512), who later became the bishop of Varmia (Ermland), he was elected a canon of the cathedral chapter of Frombork (Frauenburg). As part of his requirement as a canon, he matriculated in 1496 in the University of Bologna to study both canon and civil law. There, he lodged with and worked as an assistant to Domenico Maria the Ferrarese of Novara (1454-1504), professor of mathematics and astrology and also the official compiler of prognostications for the university. After briefly returning to Frombork, Copernicus studied medicine at the University of Padua (1501-3) and then moved on to the University of Ferrara where he obtained a doctorate in Canon Law (1503). He then returned to Varmia, where he was based for the rest of his life. He acted as medical advisor and secretary to his uncle at Heilsberg, and was later heavily involved with the administrative tasks in the diocese of Frombork.
