     Extractions: BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS VOL. 73 A YDELOTTE WAS A leading figure in the development of social science history in the United States. Many historians consider themselves humanists or argue that theirs is a unique discipline. Others are social scientists in intellectual commitment and methods of research, and it was from this group that Aydelotte was the first to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Beneath the affiliative differences among historians lie disagreements as to whether history should be presented in narrative or analytical form, the degree to which historical evidence can serve as the basis for generalization and, indeed, what constitutes appropriate evidence. Aydelotte's career illuminates these issues. Publishing initially in the field of narrative diplomatic history, he emerged as the most innovative investigator of legislative behavior of his era in the history profession. Majoring in classics at Harvard University, Aydelotte graduated in 1931. In his estimation he did not have an outstanding undergraduate career, but did make Phi Beta Kappa. Although at Harvard he found the teaching of E. K. Rand and Milman Perry to be challenging, the classics program was not outstanding in his years there. In contemplating graduate work, he decided to study history and proceeded to take a Ph.D. in history at the University of Cambridge. There distinguished scholars Harold Temperley and Herbert Butterfield provided more rigorous intellectual discipline than he had hitherto experienced. But, neither his classical training nor his graduate studies in history acquainted him with systematic inquiry or scientific approaches to the acquisition of knowledge. Throughout his educational and early professional years, astigmatism prevented him from undergoing military training or service.

     Extractions: Anyone who has taken more than one English class will recognize many of Strunk and White's style rules. Each rule includes a least one and sometimes several examples which provide some of the clearest demonstrations of good and bad style. Many writers still practice these rules today, but some rules fall short when applied to conventional modern usage. For example, one rule states that writers can use he as a universal, singular pronoun meaning any single person. In modern usage burdened with political correctness, such a usage would quickly receive the label "sexist" and, in fact, has quickly fallen out of practice. Since one cannot easily determine the status of Strunk and White's rules, I recommend using a more modern reference like The Chicago Manual of Style

I suppose that every field of science develops its own set of characters, introverted geniuses, extroverted braggadocios, curmudgeons of every ilk, and just a few folk who are as close to being perfect companions and colleagues as anyone has any right to expect. In our sparsely populated field of glaciology we have our share of individuals in each category, and one of the finest in the last group was Bill Field (1904-94). Over the 25 years or so that I knew him, he was the kindest, most gentle, helpful, and modest glaciologist I met. It is indeed a pleasure to read the excellent biography that Suzanne Brown has generated from the tape recordings she made of Bill discussing his life and work, which the University of Alaska Press has produced as a handsome book.
