Nightingale was born to wealthy English parents and proved to be a quick-witted and independent child. In 1837 she felt she heard a call from God, though the calling was unclear. She developed an interest in nursing and, despite opposition from her parents, eventually trained as a nurse and began work in a London clinic. After the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, she led a group of three dozen nurses to Constantinople to serve in British military hospitals there. (This was controversial: female nurses had not previously served in such wartime field hospitals.) No shrinking violet, she cajoled army officials to change terrible conditions in the hospitals, earning the gratitude of soldiers and a measure of public fame. "I have never loved but one person with passion in my life, and that was her", Florence wrote. But Marianne's brother had fallen in love with Florence, and when Florence finally declined his proposal of marriage, the two women had a falling out. She clearly was emotionally devoted to women, never to men, and adamantly refused all offers of marriage. Living in the repressed world of Victorian values, who can say if she ever expressed her love physically? But, as I always say, you don't have to have sex to be gay (but it helps!).
