Extractions: Version for printing Carl Neumann was the son of Franz Neumann who has a biography in this archive. His mother was Bessel Hesse After receiving his doctorate, Neumann studied for his habilitation and he submitted his thesis to the University of Halle. He received his habilitation giving him the right to lecture in 1858 when he became a Privatdozent at Halle. He was promoted to extraordinary professor in 1863. Appointed to Leipzig in the autumn of 1868 he gave his inaugural lecture, called an Antrittsvorlesung, in 1869 with the title On the principles of the Galileian-Newtonian theory of mechanics. The German text of this lecture is given in [2]. Neumann held the chair at Leipzig until he retired in 1911 but sadly his wife died in 1875. Wussing writes in [1]:- Neumann, who led a quite life, was a successful university teacher and a productive researcher. More than two generations of future Gymnasium teachers received their basic mathematical education from him. He worked on a wide range of topics in applied mathematics such as mathematical physics

The Neumann series , which is analogous to the geometric series but for infinite matrices , is named after him. Franz Ernst Neumann - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia His son, carl gottfried neumann (18321925), became in 1858 Privatdozent, and in1863 extraordinary professor of mathematics at Halle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Ernst_Neumann
Extractions: The Red Cross and other charities also need your help. Franz Ernst Neumann September 11 May 23 ) was a German mineralogist physicist and mathematician Neumann was born at Joachimstal . In 1815 he interrupted his studies at Berlin to serve as a volunteer in the campaign against Napoleon , and was wounded in the battle of Ligny . Subsequently he entered Berlin University as a student of theology , but soon turned to scientific subjects. His earlier papers were mostly concerned with crystallography , and the reputation they gained him led to his appointment as Privatdozent at the K¶nigsberg University , where in 1828 he became extraordinary, and in 1829 ordinary, professor of mineralogy and physics . In 1831, from a study of the specific heats of compounds, he formulated Neumann's law , which expressed in modern language runs: The molecular heat of a compound is equal to the sum of the atomic heats of its constituents. Devoting himself next to optics, he produced memoirs which entitle him to a high place among the early searchers after a true dynamical theory of light. In 1832, by the aid of a particular hypothesis as to the constitution of the ether, he reached by a rigorous dynamical calculation results agreeing with those obtained by

Extractions: Seems like a silly thing but I was curious one day so I traced it back as far as I could. Updates to this as I learn more. Individuals are listed in the form (Name / Place of PhD / Date of PhD). I traced it by hand back to 1954 but through the genius of the Theory of Computation Ph.D. Genealogy Database and The TCS Genealogy I was able to go back to 1856. Very nice. Things get really interesting because Franz Neumann was influenced by Euler and had Kirchhoff was one of his students. Also, Carl Neumann was a friend of Ludwig Otto Hesse and studied Riemann surfaces. Well now is 2003 and Benjamin Kuipers has sent me some updates that seem to lead this academic genealogy in a different course. It seems the correct list (after Neumann) is: Carl Gottfried Neumann (Konigsberg, 1856). Friedrich Julius Richelot (Konigsberg, 1831). Karl Gustaf Jacob Jacobi (Berlin, 1825). Enno Heeren Dirksen (Gottingen, 1820). Johann Tobias Meyer d.J. (Gottingen, 1773). Abraham Gotthelf Kaestner (Leipzig, 1739). Christian August Hausen (Halle-Wittenberg, 1713).
