    Extractions: Version for printing Stefan Mazurkiewicz 's father was a barrister in Warsaw. Stefan attended secondary school in Warsaw, graduating in 1907. Mazurkiewicz decided not to remain in Warsaw for his university education, taking what was a typical route for Poles at this time. We shall give some background to the political situation in Poland to explain why this was so. Mazurkiewicz returned to Galicia for his doctorate, which was supervised by Sierpinski on space filling curves at the University of Lvov. His doctorate was awarded in 1913, but World War I began the following year and it was to bring major changes in Poland and to Mazurkiewicz's life. In August 1915 the Russian forces which had held Poland for many years withdrew from Warsaw. Germany and Austria-Hungary took control of most of the country and a German governor general was installed in Warsaw. One of the first moves after the Russian withdrawal was the refounding of the University of Warsaw and it began operating as a Polish university in November 1915. At this point Mazurkiewicz became a professor at this reborn University of Warsaw and he would remain on the staff of the university for the rest of his life. Kuratowski attended seminars given by Mazurkiewicz in Warsaw before the end of the war. He writes in [2]:-

Powązki Cemetery Powązki Cemetery Polish Cmentarz powązkowski ) is the oldest and most famous cemetery in Warsaw Poland , which is situated in the western part of the city. It contains a mausoleum with memorials to many of the greats in Polish history including many interred since 1925 along the "Avenue of the Meritorious" ( Aleja Zasłużonych , est. )). It has also a very large military section for the graves of those who fought and died for their country in the past 200 years including the large number of those involved in the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis during World War II , the Battle of Warsaw and the September Campaign edit As a matter of fact, the Powązki is a necropoly consisting of a whole complex of cemeteries. In most cemeteries in the Warsaw city centre were closed due to sanitary reasons and a new Catholic cemetery in the western suburb of Powązki was created. Soon afterwards several other cemeteries were founded in the area: Jewish Calvinist Lutheran Caucassian and Tatar . Not far away from the Powązki necropoly, the Orthodox cemetery is located.

Similarly, any list of important twentieth century mathematicians contains Polish names in a frequency out of proportion to the size of the country. How did such creativity and mathematical influence develop in a country that had little tradition in research, that was partitioned under foreign domination from 1795 until the end of World War I, and whose educational institutions were suppressed by foreign powers. Surprisingly, it was planned! What was to become known as the Polish School of Mathematics was established following a plan proposed by Zygmunt Janiszewski. These were designed to get around the Russian and German e ducational restrictions and were written by prominent mathematicians including Janiszewski, Sierpinski, and Zaremba; they covered topics such as series, differential and integral equations, and topology. Another series it supported was ; the first issue (1917) contained two articles which were to be very important to the establishment of the Polish School of Mathematics.
