Extractions: Tilbake til hovedside Farkas Bolyai (1775-1856) became interested in the foundations of geometry and the parallel axiom while studing at the university, where he was a closed freind of Gauss. He kept this interest through the whole life and didn't stop proving the parallel postulate even after his son's discoveries. His main work, the Tentamen, was an attempt at a rigorous and systematic foundation of geometry, arithmetic, algebra and analysis. Son of Farkas Bolyai, Janos Bolyai (1802-1860), followed the path of his father and began his own investigations on the parallel postulate. In 1823 he wrote to his father, that he had "created a new, another world out of nothing". Janos published the results of his research in 1831 as an appendix to the Tentamen, written by his father. He never published other mathematical results, but he left more then 20000 pages of manuscript when he died. Nikolai Lobachevsky (1792-1856) recieved a Master Degree in physics and mathematics at Kazan University, that was established in 1804. A number of German professors were invited to lecture at the new university, Lobachevsky attended lectures on history of mathematics, given by Martin Bartels, who was a former school teacher and friend of Gauss. He became intrested in fondation of geometry and the theory of parallels. In 1829 Lobachevsky published his first article on non-euclidean geometry. The work was published in Kazan University Journal but rejected when it was submitted for publication to the St.Petersburg Academy of Science.
