Extractions: -AEER Home Page- Important Notice! The East European Anthropology Group will convene as usual during the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association (to be held this year in Chicago, November 16-20). Unfortunately, notice of our session did not appear in the preliminary program. This should be corrected in the final program but, just in case, note the following, and spread the word to all interested parties: EEAG members will meet at 5:30, Saturday, November 19, in the Field Room of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Following the meeting (at approximately 7:00) those who wish will take dinner together at a local East European restaurant. This will be a particularly important meeting. Among other topics we will need to discuss the position of EEAG in the reorganized AAA and the future of the EEAG Newsletter. This issue of the Newsletter is the next to the last to be published under the three year grant provided by the Joint Committee on Eastern Europe. Thus this meeting will be our last opportunity to discuss whether the newsletter should continue and, if so, how it will be funded. If we do decide to continue publication and find means of doing so, then we should also determine a systematic and democratic means of selecting an editor. Come to Chicago and bring your ideas.

Extractions: GERALD JANECEK Gerald J. Janecek is Professor of Russian at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Michigan in 1972. He specializes in 20th century avant-garde Russian literature of the early decades and in contemporary Russian poetry. He has written on Andrei Bely, on Russian Futurism and on a variety of contemporary Russian poets. His publications include translations of Bely's Kotik Letaev (2nd ed. Northwestern, 1999) and The First Encounter (Princeton, 1979), and the books The Look of Russian Literature (Princeton, 1984), ZAUM: The Transrational Poetry of the Russian Futurists (San Diego State University Press, 1996) and (Berghahn, 2000). THE NEW RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDES: POSTMODERN POETRY AND MULTIMEDIA IN THE LATE SOVIET AND EARLY POST-SOVIET PERIODS The current situation in Russian poetry is clearly a bitter-sweet one. On one hand, there is unprecedented freedom of expression and publication and any poet with a small amount of cash or connections or reputation can be and is being published, if only in an edition of 100-1000 copies. On the other hand, the audience for poetry has shrunk to a size comparable to that in the Western democracies, namely a minuscule one for which an edition of 100 copies might seem generous. And the rewards for being a poet are limited to a few small monetary prizes and name recognition. No more stadiums filled with eager listeners, as in the 1960s, nor advances on editions of 100,000 copies that immediately sold out.

The microfiche set is a gift of the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation.. There are 3,937 microfiches in this set. Unfortunately the microfiche does not contain an index to titles on which specific microfiche. Until a guide is published, the following index leads you to the correct microfiche numbers within the set. The entries in this index are arranged in alphabetical order by main entry (author or title). At the end of each index record is a number beginning with YI . For example, YI0681 refers to microfiche #681 of this microfiche set with call number 5947. The information about this collection of microfiche was obtained from the Harvard University Library catalogHOLLIS and is used with permission. Writing Physics From my perspective lifshitz operated in a coauthor s paradise. If Evgeniilifshitz really wrote the amazing papers of Landau, he was doing physics of http://www.lassp.cornell.edu/~cew2/KnightLecture.html
Extractions: When he invited me to deliver a lecture in this series, Jonathan Monroe provided a long list of questions that might be addressed. Many of them were autobiographical. Physics offers you so few public opportunities to talk about yourself, that I found this impossible to resist. So I'll begin with his opening question: What first drew you to your discipline? What first drew me to my discipline was magic. It came in two varieties: relativity and quantum mechanics. I know that the magic of relativity had grabbed me before I was 16, because I remember the first day of high-school physics. The teacher was a tight lipped gentleman who, it was rumored, had risen to the rank of Colonel in World War I. He liked to throw hard rubber erasers at people he thought were dozing. "Physics,'' the Colonel told us, "is about laws that govern the behavior of matter. There is the law of the Conservation of Mass.'' My hand shot up. "Doesn't relativity say that mass is not conserved?'' There was a long terrifying silence. "I don't know anything about relativity,'' snarled the Colonel at last. "Do you?'' I never again inquired about anything not in the textbook:
