Ukraine is bordered on the west by Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary; on the southwest by Romania and Moldova; on the south by the Black Sea and Sea of Azov; on the east and northeast by Russia; and on the north by Belarus. The Crimean Autonomous Republicencompassing the Crimean Peninsula, or Crimea, in the southis included in Ukraines borders. The capital and largest city is Kyiv (Kiev). Much of Ukraine is a fertile plain suited for agriculture. Ukraine is rich in natural resources, and has a developed economy with significant agricultural and industrial sectors. The country has a democratic form of government headed by a president. From the 9th century AD northern Ukraine was part of Kievan Rus, the first significant East Slavic state, which succumbed to the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. Ukraine was for centuries thereafter under the rule of a succession of foreign powers, including Poland and the Russian Empire. In 1918 a Bolshevik (Communist) government was established in Ukraine, and in 1922 the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) was one of the four founding republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Ukraines declaration of independence, approved by a popular vote on December 1, 1991, was a major factor in the USSRs collapse later that month.

Extractions: The Famous Ukrainians List is a list of over three hundred people with links discussing their contributions. The people listed were either born in what are today's boundaries of Ukraine, or were/are of Ukrainian ancestry. The emphasis is on people who would be known OUTSIDE Ukraine within their particular area of specialization. There is no claim that all the people listed are "ethnically" Ukrainian but they all have some Ukrainian connection. This list is maintained by Dr. Myron Hlynka , Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. hlynka@uwindsor.ca If you are interested in the Mathematics and Statistics program at the University of Windsor, click HERE. The concept for The Famous Ukrainians Web Page came from the Montreal ukemonde (www.ukemonde.com) former list of Montreal famous Ukrainians, from the nomination form of Dr. Roman Yereniuk for the World's hundred most important Ukrainians, as suggested in the Ukrainian Voice newspaper in December, 1999, and from an article in the Spring, 2000 issue of FORUM: A Ukrainian Review , (Number 101), written by Andrew Gregorovich. That article, titled "Hall of Fame of Ukraine," is highly recommended. There is some order in our list. It includes sports, art, science, literature, history, music, politics, movies and TV, religion. The highly regarded multi volumed English language

Extractions: What was it, that interested the arists of all times engaged in this field. A classical symbol if medicine, a snake twining a cup or Aesculapius` staff., is the most frequent motif. The motifs of the end of the last century and our early century represented the studies of medical scientists, laboratories, chemist`s shops. Sometimes there occur the pictures of roentgenograms and cardiograms, a scalpel, human organs: a heart, kindneys, marrow. The ex-libris heroes are patients and physicians operating or examining their patients, nurses, sets of instruments, drug plants, etc. There are a lot of motifs representing a philosophic dialogue between a man and a scull in his hand. Some artists apply to Greek mythology. Thus, Estonian artist Lembit Lichmus has engrared in wood a picture when Achilles, a hero of the Trojan War, ties up Patrocles. A picture of Saint Apollonia, a patron of dantists, rather frequently occurs in Italian and German ex-librists. Sometimes the miniature is decorated with a concrete portrait as, for example, in the ex-libris of the Institute of Pathology of Special Medicine at Padua University. That is the portait of Bernardino Ramozzini (16331714), an Italian scientist. One can see a picture of a raw-bone with a scythe disputing with Aesculapius in the ex-libris of Hanse Schaffer, a German, artist, who has placed them on the balance.

Before issueing the stamp (the First day of postmark 15.01.1994) the Ministry of Communications made a souvenir booklet. Yuriy Drogobych (14501494) was the first known Doctor of Medicine, the Ukrainian, Professor of medicine and astronomy, Rector of Bologna University, Professor of medical faculty of Kharkiv University. One can find his sculptural portrait (sculpturer Theodosia Bryzh) on the post age envelope of the USSR of 1990. The 500th anniversary of the scientist`s death was honoured by the memorial portrait (Drogobych, 04.02.1984). Danylo Samoilovych (17441805), a prominent epidemiologist, medical officer, organizer of medical sanitary service in Russian Empire, the author of the fundamental work about plague, a member of twelve foreign Academies. The 250th anniversary of his birth was honoured in his homeland by the memorial postmark (Chernigiv, 22.12.1994).

The specialized factory in a small western Ukrainian town in the Carpathian Mountains made the 5 kilogram (5.721 kilo to be precise) nugget after work of extracting gold-containing ore had begun at the gold deposit earlier this year. It was known that there were deposits of gold and silver in the Carpathian Mountains way back in the Soviet times but for some reasons these deposits were not used. It was only this year that a factory was built at a gold deposit. It will produce about a ton of gold annually. Porto-Franco free economic zone was unveiled in the Odesa Sea Port on September 7, 1999. In the next three years no taxes at all will be collected in the Porto Franco zone, and in the following three years taxes will be paid but they will be halved. In fact, Odesa was a free economic zone in the years 1819-1858. During that time the foreign trade turnover increased more than sixfold and Odesa became the biggest port in the south of the Russian Empire. Any science, including history, begins with a painstaking analysis of available factual data. Even the ancients had a general idea of this basic truth. Yet history has its own peculiarities. Whereas the exact sciences, especially those of an applied and technical nature, largely depend on experiments without which it would be extremely difficult or downright impossible to make any substantiated generalizations, in the case of history a similar function is reserved for the exploration of historical sources. They represent the groundwork and framework of history, which would be unthinkable without them. Unlike a physicist with his experiments, a historian has no possibility to conduct even an imaginary experiment of reviving, say, Bohdan Khmelnytsky to ask him what really happened in the 17th century.

The December 15, 2000, issue of Svoboda carried an in memoriam article about her. It wrote how she fought with the OUN, making no distinction between the Melnyk and Bandera factions, and then how she continued the struggle in the DP camps of Germany. She started a new life with her husband in Minnesota, then Colorado, all the while yearning for an independent Ukraine and Church.
