Extractions: STATE FARM MUTUAL AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE COMPANY, Plaintiff, v. GEORGE HYMAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, n/k/a THE CLARK CONSTRUCTION GROUP, INC., Defendant-Appellant, and Appeal from Circuit Court of McLean County No. 95L310 Honorable Ronald C. Dozier, Judge Presiding. JUSTICE McCULLOUGH delivered the opinion of the court: On November 13, 1995, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company (State Farm) filed suit against Clark Construction Group, Inc. (Clark) (then known as George Hyman Construction Company (Hyman)), Clark's subcontractors, and their respective sureties for breach of a contract to construct a large office building. Clark and its subcontractors filed cross-claims against each other. Now Clark has settled with State Farm and seeks to have the remaining cross-claims between it and the subcontractors arbitrated. The primary issues on appeal are whether the remaining cross-claims fall within the scope of the subcontracts' arbitration clause and whether Clark is procedurally barred from seeking arbitration. The trial court denied arbitration, and Clark is before this court on interlocutory appeal. We affirm. I. BACKGROUND

Extractions: John Desmond Bernal was a prominent international scientist, born in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, Ireland. He did pioneering work in X-ray crystallography. He was Professor of Physics at Birkbeck College, University of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He ranged widely in his intellectual interests and activities, also doing pioneering work in social studies of science or "science of science". He was by all accounts a dazzling thinker and talker. His contemporaries called him "Sage", as he was considered to be uncommonly wise. He was a marxist in philosophy and a communist in politics. He led a complicated life, sitting on hundreds of committees and playing a leading role in many scientific and political organisations. He also led a somewhat unconventional domestic life of a notoriously non-monogamous nature. The following is an extract from my book Humanities Press International 1985 and 1993. Other extracts on this website are on Caudwell Haldane and Lysenko as well as the introduction to the 2nd edition dealing with the position of Marxism in the 1990s British Marxism: A Turning Point 1931 was also the year in which British scientists gathered in the lecture hall of the Science Museum in South Kensington on a Saturday morning in July at the special session of the 2nd International Congress of the History of Science and Technology. The session had been organised for participants to hear their Soviet colleagues explain their approach to history and philosophy of science. Earlier in the week, the unexpected arrival of a large Soviet delegation had created a great stir in Britain. To the majority of scientists present, the Soviet viewpoint was something of a curiosity. To a minority, those in whom it crystallised something that had already been stirring, it had a profound impact. It was an experience that gave the initial impetus to the development of a distinctive school of Marxist thought in Britain.

Extractions: E-MAIL: bill_toll@yahoo.com Course Description Introduction to course content This course will examine how persons identifying themselves as Jews in the United States have continually reinvented the meaning of being Jewish in response to the unique opportunities and demands of the American political culture. Much of the focus will be on patterns of immigration, and on techniques of community building in response to crises like war and depression that all Americans faced. We will pay particular attention to several ideologies, especially Reform and Conservative Judaism and Socialism/trade unionism as they were used by different groups of Jews at different times to claim a stake in American society. The middle portion of the course will analyze the migration of about two million Jews from Eastern Europe to the United States and the emergence of their children as American citizens between 1880 and World War II. We will examine how large groups of Jews settled into America in conjunction with other east European immigrants, and how political ideas especially Socialism and trade unionism affected their communal organization and what they came to expect from government. We conclude this portion of the course by comparing the upsurge of xenophobia of the early 1920s with the extraordinary Jewish social mobility toward the end of the decade.
