    Extractions: in , by Greg N. Frederickson Mike Drazin, a mathematics professor at Purdue University, wondered why I had not written a short biography of John Leech. Although Leech seems never to have published his 10-piece dissection of a 6-cube into a 3-cube, a 4-cube, and a 5-cube, it was pivotal in stimulating Roger Wheeler to find his 8-piece dissection. Once I thought about it, I had to agree with Mike. So, better late than never: John Leech was born in 1926 in Weybridge, Surrey, England, and died in 1992. He earned a B.A. in mathematics from King's College Cambridge in 1950. His work on two early computer projects led to a computing lectureship at Glasgow University and eventually a chaired professorship in computer science at the University of Stirling, which he held until early retirement in 1980. Leech is best known for his "Leech lattice" which describes a packing of spheres in 24 dimensions. The packing's symmetry group, identified by John Conway (at Leech's instigation), played an important role in the enumeration of finite simple groups.

John Leech (1817-1864), artist and illustrator, was known for his caricatures and political and satirical lithographs, working for Bentley's Miscellany and for the newly established Punch in 1841. He was particularly strong in representing the hunting field and London fashion as can be seen particularly in his illustrations for books by Surtees. He was praised by Ruskin and his work gives a real insight into the life of mid-Victorian England.

Obituaries.     LINVILL Cornelius Linvll was born in Rush County, Indiana. July 1, 1854. When he was 6 years old his father moved the family to the present neighborhood where he was raised to manhood and was loved by all who knew him. At the age of 22 years he united in marriage to Sarah Frances Leech, to whom seven children were born, of which one preceded him to the better land in infancy. He was converted to God 26 years ago through the sickness of the first son, who was very near death and he asked God to spare the child, and promised Him if he would he would live a christian life. Since that time he has devoted his services to the cause of God. He leaves a wife, six children, five grandchildren, a father, sister and brother to mourn the loss. He died January 3rd, 1904, being 49 years, 6 months and 23 days old. LINVILL      Cornelius Linvll died Saturday evening at his home in Smith Township near Round Lake after a prolonged illness from stomach and liver trouble and rheumatism, asthma being the immediate cause of his death. The deceased was 50 years of age July 10, 1903. He leaves a wife and six children, three of whom are married. The funeral occurred Tuesday at the home. Rev. Paige officiating interment at Christian Chapel Cemetery near Merriam.

Anna Laura Griffith has published a book, "LEACH - LEECH 1700-1985". Three other sons of John Leech of Spartanburg, SC moved to Livingston County, KY either before or shortly after 1799, and she has the most information on those sons. The material Anna gathered in South Carolina also provides clues as to the relationship of this Leech family with the Leeches in neighboring York County, SC. It seems reasonable to assume that they are all cousins, but we may never know their precise relationships. Anna will mail you her book if you write her at 940 Poyners Chapel Rd., Mayfield, KY, and enclose a check for $25. Anna, however, has only about a half a page of information about this John Leech, on page 75. I follow Anna's generation numbers.

First throws a temper tantrum like a 4 year old child not getting his own way and almost refuses to finish The Brothers Grimm because Miramax made 2 small changes to the project (Changing one of the actresses and getting a new Cinematographer. Then Brothers Grimm sucked (and the suckage had nothing to do with one actress or the cinematography) and now it's coming out that Gilliam is blaming to audience of being too narrow minded to understand and appreciate his movie. That's an old sounding trick. If your movie sucks, start spewing some artistic rationale about your film and lament openly that people just "don't get it". The good folks over at give us this: Terry Gilliam is convinced The Brothers Grimm has been critically slammed because an adult audience is too narrow-minded to appreciate his fantasy-driven work. "One of the things I enjoy about my films is that children really love them. They are open-minded. As we get older we seem to close in. We limit the size of the world we limit everything about it. It appears that no report has been prepared and certainly not submitted to either the Executive or the Health and Well-being Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Cllr John Leech said, "This is a cynical ploy to sweep the closures under the carpet, without any chance to debate the closure programme. The Labour Council is trying to bypass the Scrutiny process and make decisions behind closed doors."
