    Extractions: Cartoonist, caricaturist, and illustrator famous for his work for Punch , Leech was educated at Charterhouse, and then studied medicine, but turned to art. From 1841 he contributed hundreds of sketches of middle-class life and political cartoons to Punch , as well as to the Illustrated London News (1856) and Once a Week (1859-62). He illustrated several books, including Dickens's A Christmas Carol and the sporting novels of R. S. Surtees. John Leech, the son of a Coffee House proprietor, was born in London on 29th August, 1817. He was educated at Charterhouse, while W. M. Thackeray was still a student there, and at the age of sixteen he went to St. Bartholomew's to study medicine. Leech's teachers should became aware of Leech's superb anatomical drawings and began commissioning him to paint portraits. was one of the artists considered to replace Robert Seymour for Pickwick and, although not selected, Leech left medical school and tried to make a living from drawing and painting. His first known published work was a pamphlet called Etchings and Sketchings, By A Pen, Esq.

    Extractions: Created on Aug. 25, 2001 My interest in the Kilpatrick family stems primarily from one datum, which is critical to my family history: In 1753 James Killpatrick was admininstrator of the estate of William Leech in Anson Co. NC (which at that time included York Co. SC). This is the earliest reference I've found to my Leech family in SC. Incidentally it was also the year of the birth of Katherine Kilpatrick Kerr, who died in 1821 in York Co. The Kilpatricks appear to belong to the large clan of Scotch Irish who showed up along the PA-MD border in the early 18th Century and moved downward successively occupying land in VA, NC, and SC. This file contains data reflecting their presence at various times at various places, particularly as they resemble similar data re the Leech and Dickey families. In 1727 John Kilpatrick was an elder at Octoraro Presbyterian Church near the boundary line between the two colonies (cf p 217 of Robt W. Ramsey, Carolina Cradle). Other elders at Octoraro were James Alexander and Patrick Campbell.

At school he was Thackeray's schoolmate and later he met the writers Albert Smith and Percival Leigh, for whom he was to illustrate some books.
