The nobles and urban patricians of Zaragoza offered their resources for its development: palaces, churches, paintings, print shops and literary and scientific works represented a great endeavour that attracted and developed the most diverse techniques and the most refined exercise of the intellect. Thus, in the year 1542 the University of Zaragoza was granted the authority to take the giant step to become what we today call University. That was four hundred and fifty years ago and is what we remember, but it was necessary to continue the endeavour, and many illusions were lost by the wayside, until others who kept or received their enthusiasm and avoided obstacles, as did Pedro Cerbuna, gave their best efforts and were able to create the General School of All Faculties in 1583, whose fourth centenary was celebrated in 1983.

C., Universidade de Lisboa Alvarus Thomas (fl. 1509), a Portuguese master at the University of Paris at the beginning of the sixteenth century, is still a poorly known historical figure. In his Liber de triplici motu he presented a comprehensive and sophisticated analysis of the theory of proportions and of the science of motion of his time, in the characteristic form of the Calculatory tradition. Besides some interesting criticism of contemporary physical theories, this work is also relevant from the point of view of mathematics since Thomas achieves some surprising results in the study of infinite series. In this paper I summarize the present knowledge on Alvarus Thomas. I collect all biographical information currently available and present very briefly the contents of the Liber de triplici motu adding some observations on its historical context and influence.

They were called the moderni , and their teaching was known as the via modernorum , in opposition to the earlier scholastic systems, more especially to Thomism, the via antiqua PETRUS MANTUANUS (professor from 1393 to 1400), PAUL PERGULENSIS (fl. 1451), both of whom wrote treatises on logic, J. WESSEL (fl. 1489) and GABRIEL BIEL (about 1425-1495), were militant Ockamists. Biel's Collectorium , so well known and so often edited, contains nothing original, but is rightly regarded as one of the most methodic and accurate expositions of Ockam's terminism. Biel has been called the last of the scholastics; the title, however, is unmeaning unless it be taken as referring to the rapid decadence of philosophy after his time. As a matter of fact, multitudes of "scholastics" came after Biel, but how few of them are of any importance! Here are some of the principal names: OLIVIER OF SIENA ( doctor artium et medicinae , wrote a Tractatus Rationalis Scientiae , about 1491) and his disciples ALEXANDER SERMONETA, BENEDICTUS VICTORIUS FAVENTINUS, etc.; ANTONIUS SYLVESTER (fl. 1515); STEPHANUS DE MONTE, professor at Padua in 1490; JUDOCUS ISENACENSIS (fl. 1519), BARTHOLOMAEUS ARNOLDI (fl. 1532).
