Mark Grigorievich Krein 3 April 17 October ) was a Ukrainian Jewish mathematician, one of the major figures of the Soviet school of mathematics. He is known for his development of functional analysis methods, particularly in operator theory , in close connection with concrete problems coming from mathematical physics , in particular differential equations and normal modes He was born in Kiev , leaving home at age 17 to go to Odessa . He had a difficult academic career, not completing his first degree and constantly being troubled by anti-Semitic discrimination. Despite that he left a large legacy of work, much of it having classical status, for example in the moment problem . He was awarded the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1982 (jointly with Hassler Whitney He died in Odessa. Krein Biography of mark krein (19071989) mark G krein s father was involved inthe wood trade which meant that the family had little money. http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Krein.html
Extractions: Version for printing Mark G Krein 's father was involved in the wood trade which meant that the family had little money. The fact that the family were Jewish meant that Krein grew up in an atmosphere of persecution. This was also highly significant for Krein's subsequent career, for discrimination against Jews in the Ukraine was bad and, by misfortune for Krein, was particularly bad in Odessa where he lived from the age of 17. Krein showed a remarkable talent for mathematics at a young age. By the time he reached 14 years of age he was already attending research seminars in mathematics in Kiev. However, Krein never completed his undergraduate degree for he left his home in Kiev when he was 17 years old and ran away to Odessa. Despite the lack of an undergraduate degree, his talents were clearly visible to the mathematicians at Odessa University and, in 1926, Krein was accepted for doctoral studies under Chebotaryov Chebotaryov himself was not in the happiest of positions for, after working at Odessa University, he had accepted a permanent post in Moscow in 1924. The political situation surrounding this appointment induced him to leave Moscow and return to Odessa after only a few months. Krein therefore began his doctoral studies well aware of the difficulties of the time.

Extractions: The concept of the spectral shift function was introduced by Mark Krein and has become one of the central objects in the spectral and perturbation theory of linear operators. Its importance is due to its widespread applications in a variety of fields including scattering theory; relative index theory; spectral averaging and its application to localization properties of random Hamiltonians; eigenvalue counting functions and spectral asymptotics; semi-classical approximation, and trace formulas for Schrodinger and Jacobi operators. It would not be an exaggeration to claim that the spectral shift function is a product of a remarkable interplay between functional analysis and function theory. Leaving aside numerous applications, we will concentrate primarily on the basics of this theory, revealing the depth of functional analytical aspects related to this function.
