Extractions: William Thomson wurde am 26. Juni 1824 in Belfast geboren. Nach dem Tode seiner Mutter 1830 übernahm Thomsons Vater, ein Mathematikprofessor seine Grundausbildung. Als dieser 1832 einen Ruf nach Glasgow erhielt immatrikulierte er seinen 11jährigen Sohn an der dortigen Universität. Thomson bewältigte das Mathematikstudium erfolgreich und machte sich insbesondere mit den Arbeiten von Laplace und mit Fouriers Werk über die Wärmeleitung bekannt. Im Jahr 1841 kam er nach Cambridge und studierte dort Naturwissenschaft. Nach einem einjährigem Aufenthalt 1845 in Paris erhielt er 1846 einen Ruf als Professor für theoretische Physik an die Universität Glasgow. Er experimentierte 1847 mit seinem Freund George Stokes im Bereich der Hydrodynamik. 1848 veröffentlichte Thomson die erste größere Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der Thermodynamik, in der er auf der Grundlage der Carnotschen Wärmetheorie eine absolute Skala für die Temperatur vorschlug. Die absolute Temperatur wird noch heute in Kelvin angegeben. Im Jahre 1851 wurde er in die Royal Society aufgenommen. 1853 fand er mit James Prescott Joule , dass die Temperatur eines Gases bei einer Ausdehnung gegen einen Widerstand ohne äußere Arbeitsleistung sinkt. Kelvin hizo sus estudios en la Universidad de Glasgow y en el Saint Peter's College de Cambridge. En 1846 fue nombrado profesor de filosofía natural de la Universidad de Glasgow, puesto que desempeñó hasta jubilarse en 1899. En 1896 se le rindió un homenaje, al que concurrieron científicos de todo el mundo, por sus investigaciones en los dominios de la termodinámica y de la electricidad. Hasta 1904 se prolongaron sus actividades académicas como canciller de la citada Universidad. Kelvin fue el primero en atraer la atención de los científicos al campo de la termodinámica con su descubrimiento del fenómeno de absorción calorífica llamado efecto Thomson (1856). Poco después enunció la teoría de la disipación de la energía, según la cual, aunque la cantidad de energía total de un sistema puede mantenerse constante, la parte utilizable de la misma disminuye continuamente. Estudiando la compresión de los gases, Kelvin descubrió el efecto Joule-Thomson referente a las variaciones térmicas que sufren los gases cuando son forzados por efecto de una presión a pasar a través de orificios pequeños. Como resultado de tales experiencias, encontró que el cero absoluto de temperatura se encuentra a los -273°C y propuso que los científicos emplearan para ciertas medidas la escala absoluta de temperaturas, hoy llamada escala Kelvin.
