The p -adic number systems were first described by Kurt Hensel in 1897. For each prime p , the p -adic number system extends the ordinary arithmetic of the rational numbers in a way different from the extension of the rational number system to the real and complex number systems. This is achieved by an alternative interpretation of the concept of absolute value . The p -adic numbers were motivated primarily by an attempt to bring the ideas and techniques of power series methods into number theory , but their influence now extends far beyond this. For example, the field of p -adic analysis essentially provides an alternative form of calculus More precisely, for a given prime

Hensel's Lemma - All About All In mathematics, hensel s lemma, named after kurt hensel, is a generic name foranalogues for padic fields of the Newton method for solving equations. http://www.allaboutall.info/article/Hensel's_lemma

Since p-adic analysis is in some ways simpler than real analysis , there are relatively neat criteria guaranteeing a root of a polynomial. One version of the lemma is as follows. Let f x ) be a polynomial with integer coefficients, k is an integer not less than 2 and p is a prime number . Suppose that r is a solution of the congruence If , then there is a unique integer t p , such that with t given by If, on the other hand, , and in addition, , then for all integers t Also, if and , then has no solution for any See also: Hensel ring, Henselization. HELMUT HASSE In 1820, Hasse went to Marburg, and under the direction of kurt hensel, discoveredwhat is now known as the Hasse principle, or localglobal principle, http://faculty.evansville.edu/ck6/bstud/hasse.html
Extractions: mathematician Helmut Hasse was one of Emmy Noether's colleagues at the University of Göttingen, prior to her emigrating to the United States in 1933. With Hasse and Richard Brauer, Noether published fundamental results in R. Brauer, H. Hasse, and E. Noether, "Beweis eines Hauptsatzes in der Theorie der Algebren," Jounal für die reine und angewandte Mathematik After serving in the German navy during World War I, Hasse matriculated at the University of Göttingen in 1918. There he attended lectures of Edmund Landau, David Hilbert, Emmy Noether, and Erich Hecke. In 1820, Hasse went to Marburg, and under the direction of Kurt Hensel, discovered what is now known as the Hasse principle, or "local-global" principle, in algebraic number theory. Hasse held positions at the universities in Kiel, Halle, and Marburg prior to 1933. In that year, drastic changes took place in Germany and German universities. Jewish academics, including Emmy Noether, were deprived of their academic positions, and they left for other countries. At Göttingen, Hilbert had retired in 1930, and his chair, considered the foremost in mathematics in Germany, was filled by Hermann Weyl. With the troubles of 1933, Weyl resigned, and Helmut Hasse was appointed to the chair. The following year, Hasse became director of the Mathematical Institute at Göttingen, signifying both his eminence as a mathematician and political acceptability to the Nazi regime. Much is written in the references cited below about Hasse's views and activities during those difficult times.

Snedecor Calculation and Interpretation of Analysis of Variance and Covariance (1934). (David, 1995). It is sometimes called Snedecor's F distribution although the letter was chosen to honor Fisher. Fisher's original development of the analysis of variance (see the entry variance.) was not based on F but on a related quantity z. (see the entry z and the z distribution.) The term F distribution is found in Leo A. Aroian, "A study of R. A. Fisher's z distribution and the related F distribution," Ann. Math. Statist. FACTOR (noun). Fibonacci (1202) used factus ex multiplicatione (Smith vol. 2, page 105). Factor appears in English in 1673 in Elements of Algebra by John Kersey: "The Quantities given to be multiplied one by the other are called Factors." FACTOR (verb) appears in English in 1848 in Algebra by J. Ray: "The principal use of factoring, is to shorten the work, and simplify the results of algebraic operations." Factorize (spelled "factorise") is found in 1886 in Algebra by G. Chrystal (OED2).

David (1995) discusses the difficulties in dating P -value, the idea of which goes back to Laplaceat leastbefore opting for a reference from 1960! Subsequently David (1998) chose W. E. Deming's Statistical Adjustment of Data of 1943. When Deming wrote the phrase "value of P " was current. It was used in Karl Pearson's (1900) "On the Criterion that a Given System of Deviations from the Probable in the Case of Correlated System of Variables is such that it can be Reasonably Supposed to have Arisen from Random Sampling" ( Philosophical Magazine , 157-175) and used very heavily in R. A. Fisher's Statistical Methods for Research Workers (1925). The use of P -values (or prob-values) is often set against the use of fixed significance levels, especially 5%. It is ironical then that the "value of P " should feature so strongly in Fisher's book when that work also did so much to popularise the use of the 5% level. [John Aldrich]
