Replica of Zhang Heng's seismometer Houfeng Didong Yi Zhang Heng ), also spelled Chang Heng , was an astronomer mathematician inventor artist and literary scholar of the Eastern Han Dynasty in ancient China Born in what is now Nanyang Henan , Zhang Heng was an accomplished writer at twelve. At sixteen, he left home to pursue his study in the capital cities. He spent at least ten years of his youth in literature studies and writing. He published several well recognized literary writings. Zhang Heng began his studies in astronomy at thirty. He became a government official at thirty-eight. He took on several positions since then (mostly high-level academic posts). When he was a government minister, he cleaned up some corruption in the local government. In , Zhang Heng corrected the Chinese calendar to bring it inline with the seasons. In , Zhang Heng invented the first seismometer , called Houfeng Didong Yi (lit. instrument for measuring the seasonal winds and the movements of the Earth), for measuring

This series is found to form with a tetragonal structure for the whole family of rare-earth elements (R = La to Lu, T= Co, Ni). This new phase provides an important link between the set of ternary systems epitomised by Nd-Co-B and Nd-Co-Si, thus allowing scope for the synthesis of a range of related compounds. Similarly, compounds based on the rare-earth transition-metal system with the tetragonal I4/mmm ThCr Si X compounds exhibits a wide range of phenomena including heavy fermionic and superconducting behaviour.

Extractions: Print publication: Issue 5 (14 May 1996) Abstract. The formation of TiN during ball milling of Ti metal in air has been investigated by XRD, laser raman microscopy/spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results cannot be readily explained by a conventional gas - metal reaction mechanism. Instead, a new model is proposed - solid solution pumping - which involves gas absorption into the -Ti phase during the thermal spike induced by collisions, retention of absorbed nitrogen after the rapid thermal quench, homogenous nucleation of TiN, and the growth of the TiN phase at the expense of nitrided -Ti, due to additional nitrogen being `pumped' into the bulk by the sequence of collision events. The presence of Fe in small amounts is required due either to it acting as an oxygen scavenger, or as a substrate for dissociative chemisorption of nitrogen. These results are of some technical interest, since they demonstrate that TiN can be synthesized in ambient air by simple ball milling.
Extractions: Print publication: Issue 11 (17 March 1997) Abstract. Titanium hydride with a body centred tetragonal structure was rapidly synthesized at room temperature by ball milling titanium powders under a hydrogen atmosphere. The structure evolution was monitored by x-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis. Unit cell volume dilation suggests the hydrogenation process begins with the formation of a titanium - hydrogen solid solution followed by the formation of titanium hydride. Dehydrogenation of the hydride produced by milling and titanium hydride prepared by standard techniques was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The hydride formed by the milling process has lower initial and final dehydrogenation temperatures and a slightly narrower dehydrogenation temperature range compared to hydride prepared by traditional methods. The extremely fine particle size, large surface area and lattice defects introduced by milling are believed to be responsible for modification of the hydrogen storage behaviour. doi:10.1088/0953-8984/9/11/005
