Extractions: Artists in Santa Catalina Island Before 1945 by Jean Stern IMPRESSIONISM IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA The first Impressionist painter in Los Angeles was Benjamin C. Brown (1865-1942). He went there to visit and sketch as early as 1886, but did not settle as a permanent resident until 1896. After finding few patrons for his portraits, Brown turned to painting landscapes in a daring, vigorously Impressionistic style. Brown was active with many of the developing art societies in southern California. Along with his brother Howell, he founded the Print Makers Society of California, which sponsored annual international print exhibitions for many years. At the turn of the century, the young Los Angeles art community could be characterized as an informal circle of artists who were also friends. Frequently, they socialized at each other's studios and on occasion painted together. With the coming of the 20th century, and the significant increase in the number of artists who chose to live in southern California, a number of clubs and associations were formed. The most important and longest-running art association is the California Art Club, formed in 1909. Within a few years, the club's membership included nearly every professional artist in southern California and even boasted many out-of-state artist-members. The California Art Club is still active today. Its president is Peter Adams and its large membership includes many of today's best-known plein air painters. In the first decade of the 20th century, Los Angeles experienced a sudden influx of Impressionist painters, among them several of the important artists who would define the California Plein Air style: Granville Redmond (1871-1935), Hanson D. Puthuff (1875-1972), William Wendt (1865-1946), Sam Hyde Harris (1889-1977), Franz A. Bischoff (1864-1929), Alfred R. Mitchell (1888-1972), Jack Wilkinson Smith (1873-1949), Jean Mannheim (1863-1945), and Maurice Braun (1877-1941). In addition, Edgar Payne (1883-1947) and his wife, Elsie Palmer Payne (1884-1971), were making frequent visits to Los Angeles and Laguna Beach. By 1913, with the arrival of Donna Schuster (1883-1953), and the return of native-born Guy Rose (1867-1925) the following year, the stage was set for one of the most remarkable and distinctive schools of regional American art.

CHEIKH ANTA DIOP Introduction Much is said and written about African-Americans shaping the popular culture of the United States with their endeavors in sports and entertainment. However, the same fervor of attention is not given to people of African descent participating in the world of science and innovation. There are a significant number of African-Americans making notable accomplishments as astronauts, chemists, inventors, information technology specialists, neurosurgeons, cancer specialists, electronic engineers and holistic practitioners centered in the African tradition of healing. Objective and Scope A selection of resources in print, electronic and video formats were brought together in this guide for the purpose of assisting Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) users in their search for materials documenting those original fruits in science, health, medicine and innovation contributed by Africans, their descendants in North America and throughout various parts of the African global community. Sources highlighted include essays and monographs, which often time exist hidden between the pages of magazines and journals or buried in chapters of books with seemingly unrelated titles. Although items cited can primarily be found in the Science, Technology and Patents Department of the Central Library, others have been identified from collections in the Social Sciences, Philosophy and Religion Department (located on lower-level three) and the History and Genealogy Department (located on lower level four).

Extractions: The dozen Capstone seniors worked directly with the students at Welsh Hills to learn about solar power, greenhouse designs, and other environmental issues during the four-month project. The twelve seniors worked to raise more than $20,000 for the project, selected a site for the greenhouse, spearheaded the design process, and undertook most of the greenhouse construction with minimal outside help. A local solar contractor, Geoff Greenfield, of Third-Sun Renewable Energy Services, installed the photovoltaic system, which made WHS the 45th official Solar School in Ohio.

Extractions: Set For Friday At Welsh Hills School, Granville A collaborative project between Denison University and The Welsh Hills School comes to fruition at 3 p.m. on Friday (May 3) the grand opening of a solar greenhouse and solar electric demonstration system being constructed by students from both schools. The event will be held at the Welsh Hills School, 2610 Newark-Granville Road in Granville, Ohio. DU student Amanda Sage '02 drills while Jen Firth '02 holds one of the posts for the new solar greenhouse. The project was initially established jointly by Abram W. Kaplan, associate professor and director of environmental studies at Denison University, and Evelyn Hoyt Frolking, head of Welsh Hills School. Each spring, the graduating senior environmental studies majors at Denison gather for a last class together, a community-based, hands-on seminar focused on a single real-world project. Each year the class takes on a different "client," and engages in a project that hopes to make a difference and integrate the education the students have obtained during their Denison career. This term, Kaplan's class has been working with the Welsh Hills School, a small independent school in Granville, to raise energy awareness and create two tangible elements that will help to foster school activities and teaching in the years to come. These elements are a solar electric demonstration system (part of the national "Solar Schools" program) and a greenhouse to support on-going gardening efforts at the school. The Denison students have been teaching the WHS students on a regular basis (a few hours per week) and have developed curricula, specified the greenhouse design, obtained a contractor/educational-consultant, and prepared the WHS children for the construction process. For the last two weeks, the two groups have worked side by side, digging trenches, drilling holes, shoveling gravel, and now actually constructing the greenhouse itself. Extractions: Return to Math Index Math and Games of Ancient Civilizations Tamara Werner Academic Setting For readers that are hoping to use my unit, I want to explain some statistics. These statistics have everything to do with why a lot of my students are having a hard time with academics in school. The majority of parents in the West Gate Community make below $25,000 annually. Actually 43% of the parents make this low wage. I hope that you can see how these children come from poor backgrounds. For a family of five or more, they make less than a teacher does. Parents who send their children to Truman make a low wage because most of them have only a high school diploma. Exactly 42% have such a Diploma. This seems low to me, because I come from a background where everyone at least gets through high school and graduates. Most even go and get some college education. But with the West Gate Community, many of them do not have that opportunity to be able to finish all their schooling. Then again we go back down with 19% not even finishing high school.
