Much more historical information is available from the History of Mathematics Archive or the Museum of the History of Science Sir George Biddell Airy , b. 1801, Alnwick, England, d. 1892. British astronomer who studied diffraction (among other topics), in which he used Airy functions, which satisfy a differential equation of the form u'' = x u. Actually, these are equivalent to Bessel functions with a fractional index. Jean le Rond d' Alembert In our text we encounter his original idea for solving the wave equation, which evolved into the method of characteristics . He also contributed to celestial mechanics, geometry, hydrodynamics, and complex analysis. His most important scientific writing was his (1743), but perhaps his greatest contribution to mankind was his development of the theory of the construction of eyeglasses.
History Of Operator Theory and the work of Vito Volterra and ivar fredholm on integral equations. A major event was the appearance of fredholm s theory of integral equations, http://www.mathphysics.com/opthy/OpHistory.html
Extractions: In the first textbook on operator theory, published in Warsaw 1932, Stefan Banach states that the subject of the book is the study of functions on spaces of infinite dimension, especially those he coyly refers to as spaces of type B, otherwise Banach spaces definition This was a good description for Banach, but tastes vary. I propose rather the "operational" definition that operators act like matrices . And what that means depends on who you are. If you are an engineering student, matrices are particular symbols you manipulate to solve linear systems. As a working engineer you may instead use Heaviside's operational calculus, in which you are permitted to do all sorts of dangerous manipulations of symbols for derivatives and what not, exactly as if they were matrices, in order to solve linear problems of applied analysis. About 90% of the time you will get the right answer, just like the student; somewhat more with experience. And that is good enough, if the bridges you build aren't where I drive. In mathematics the student of elementary analysis learns that matrices are linear functions relating finite-dimensional vector spaces, and conversely. As a working mathematician the analyst has lost all fear of minor matters like infinity, and will happy agree with Banach's definition.

Extractions: Chemist and cosmetic executive, Hazel Gladys Bishop was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. She made an indelible mark on the cosmetics industry by inventing non-smear ("stays on you not on him") kissproof lipstick. During WW II, as senior organic chemist with Standard Oil, she discovered the cause of deposits affecting superchargers of aircraft engines. She never married. In 1949, after a long series of home experiments, in a kitchen fitted out as a laboratory, she perfected a lipstick that stayed on the lips longer than any other product then available, and began its manufacture. It was introduced at $1 a tube in the summer of the following year. In 1951, a partner forced her out of the $10 million company she created. Walter Noddack Born 17 Aug 1893; died 7 Dec 1960. Walter Karl Friedrich Noddack was a German chemist who discovered the element rhenium (Jun 1925) in collaboration with his wife Ida Tacke. In 1922, he began a long search for undiscovered elements. After three years, the careful fractionation of certain ores yielded element 75, a rare heavy metallic element that resembles manganese. Named rhenium after the Rhine River, it was the last stable element to be discovered. Noddack is also remembered for arguing for a concept he called allgegenwartskonzentration or, literally, omnipresent concentration. This idea, reminiscent of Greek philosopher Anaxagoras, assumed that every mineral actually contained every element. The reason they could not all be detected was they existed in too small quantities.

Extractions: English physical anthropologist, geologist, and paleontologist best known for his work in the relative dating of fossils by fluorine content. While working for the British Natural History Museum, Oakley become famous in 1953 for exposing a forgery. A " Piltdown Man " skull had been "unearthed" in 1912, in Piltdown, England, and had for decades been said to represent the "missing link" in human evolution. Oakley developed a method , based on a French minerologist's theory that bones would gradually absorb fluorine from surrounding soil, to measure the fluorine levels in bones. With this and other tests he proved the true age of the bones to be a modern human braincase and an orangutan jawbone. The bones of the forgery had been chemically stained to appear ancient.
