Extractions: Version for printing Ivar Fredholm 's parents were Ludvig Oscar Fredholm and Catharina Paulina Stenberg. Ludvig Fredholm was a merchant who made his fortune replacing gas lamps with electric lamps. He married Catharina, who was herself the daughter of a merchant, on 2 May 1861 in Arboga. They were wealthy, well-educated people who wanted the very best education for their sons Ivar and John Oscar (born 1875), and they were able to afford the very best. Ivar, who was born in the Klara area of Stockholm City, proved a brilliant school pupil at the Beskowska School in Stockholm and he was awarded his baccalaureate on 16 May 1885. Soon after the award of his baccalaureate, Fredholm entered the Royal Technological Institute in Stockholm (known as KTH), studying there for a year. Bernkopf writes in [1]:- During this single year he developed an interest in the technical problems of practical mechanics that was to last all his life and that accounted for his continued interest in applied mathematics.

Fredholm Integral Equation - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia In mathematics, the fredholm integral equation introduced by ivar fredholm givesrises to a fredholm operator. From the point of view of functional analysis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredholm_integral_equation

In mathematics , the Fredholm integral equation introduced by Ivar Fredholm gives rises to a Fredholm operator . From the point of view of functional analysis it therefore has a well-understood abstract eigenvalue theory. In this case that is supported by a computational theory, including the Fredholm determinants An inhomogeneous Fredholm equation of the first kind is written: and the problem is, given the continuous kernel function K(t,s) , and the function g(t) , to find the function f(s) An inhomogeneous Fredholm equation of the second kind is essentially a form of the eigenvalue problem for the above equation: and the problem is again, given the kernel K(t,s) , and the function g(t) , find the function f(s) . The kernel K is a compact operator (to show this one relies on equicontinuity ). It therefore has a spectral theory that can be understood in terms of a discrete spectrum of eigenvalues that tend to 0. This underlies the theory of the equation.

Equivalently, an operator T X Y is Fredholm if it is invertible modulo compact operators , i.e., if there exists a bounded linear operator such that are compact operators on X and Y respectively. The index of a Fredholm operator is The name is for Erik Ivar Fredholm . He worked on integral equations . A continuous kernel function on a closed interval on the real line gives rise to a compact integral operator , as follows from basic results on equicontinuity . The abstract structure of Fredholm's theory (if not the computational aspects) can now be derived in terms of the spectral theory of Fredholm operators on Hilbert space . This reverses history, in the sense that
