Paul Natorp paul Gerhard Natorp was one of the most prominent philosophers in Germany Review of G. finsler s Platon und die Aristotelische Poetik (Leipzig, 1900). http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/natorp/
Extractions: Please Read How You Can Help Keep the Encyclopedia Free single Natorp completed his Habilitation under Cohen at Marburg in 1881, and taught there until his death on August 17, 1924. During his long and prolific tenure at Marburg, Natorp came into contact with a number of illustrious scholars and writers. Boris Pasternak, Karl Barth, and Ernst Cassirer were among his students; Rabindranath Tagore was his friend. In the fateful summer of 1914 the young T.S. Eliot caricatured Natorp, the director of the summer program in which he was enrolled [ image available online ]. In addition to Cohen, academic colleagues included the philosopher Nicolai Hartmann, the theologians Rudolf Bultmann and Rudolf Otto, and the literary scholar Ernst Robert Curtius. Late in life, Natorp directed Hans-Georg Gadamer's doctoral dissertation (Gadamer 1922), and, together with his long-time philosophical interlocutor, Edmund Husserl of Freiburg, engineered Martin Heidegger's appointment as an Extraordinarius at Marburg in 1923. Upon Natorp's death the following summer

Extractions: Conference in honour of Paul Koosis Abstracts Title: "Positive harmonic functions in T-automorphic domains" (joint with V Azarin and P Poggi-Corradini) When one leave nice domains in the plane (Lipschitz, for example), the number of Martin boundary points can be very large at a given boundary point. We show that if the domain $D$ is homogemeous with respect to the group action others as well. for $D$, and plays a role in the spectral analysis of certain non-selfadjont operators on the torus. John Garnett Title: "Analytic Capacity, Cauchy Integrals, Bilipschitz Maps and Cantor Sets" I will give a survey of the theory of analytic capacity and its connections to the Cauchy integral and Menger curvature, including recent work of Tolsa, Volberg and others. Victor Havin of Fourier Analysis (existence of a non-zero L^2 function on the line with bounded spectrum and prescribed majorant of the modulus). This theorem will be discussed in connection with similar problems for shift coinvariant ("model") subspaces of the Hardy H^2 space on the line. The talk is based on a joint work with Javad Mashreghi.

Extractions: Although statistical theory and measurement play central roles in mathematical psychology, the application of differential geometry methods to problems in asymptotic statistical theory and measurement is much less prevalent among mathematical psychologists. This workshop will focus upon the application of differential geometry methods to problems in measurement and statistics. The tutorial workshop will immediately precede the regular sessions of the Annual Meeting of the Society for Mathematical Psychology. Typically, workshop talks consist of an approximate 45-60 minutes of tutorial material followed by 15-30 minutes of recent state-of-the-art research in the area targeted by the invited speaker. Like last year, we have an exciting line-up of invited speakers! About the Invited Speakers Professor Paul Vos (Department of Biostatistics

During this period, he wrote or commissioned short reviews of virtually every article or book in the field of logic. Church's reviews are valuable both for the keen insights they contain and for the record they provide of mid-twentieth century logic and philosophy of logic. Extractions: A Talk with Verena Huber-Dyson I doubt that pure philosophical discourse can get us anywhere. Maybe phenomenological narrative backed by psychological and anthropological investigations can shed some light on the nature of Mathematical Truth. As to Beauty in mathematics and the sciences, here speaks Sophocles' eyewitness in Antigone: "..... Why should I make it soft for you with tales to prove myself a liar? Truth is Right." Princeton, 1950s Photo by Oskar Morgenstern, Institute of Advanced Study Archives A true Realist, a true Platonist will not stoop to choose between Beauty and Truth, he will have the tenacity to stick it through until Truth is caught shining in her own Beauty. Sure there are messy proofs, we have to bushwhack trough a wilderness of ad hoc arguments, tours de force, combinatorial jungles, false starts and the temptations of definitions ever so slightly off target. Eventually, maybe not in our own lifetime, a good proof, a clear and beautiful proof will be honed out.
