Extractions: You are cordially invited to a presentation by Professor Charles Fefferman (Math Department) titled The Euler Equation and Related Problems a colloquium and personal retrospective To be held Tuesday, November 24, 1998 4:30 PM 111 Jadwin Hall (Fishbowl) Refreshments will be provided - don't miss out The Undergraduate Math and Physics Colloquium organization is a group dedicated to bringing colloquia to the undergraduate and graduate math and science community that are educational, entertaining, and inspirational. By presenting cutting-edge topics by distinguished lecturers in a fashion accessible to undergraduates, we hope to enhance the Princeton experience and provide a perspective on careers in math and science. In each of our colloquia, we include a special personal retrospective by the speaker. The retrospective is designed to allow the students to hear about what drew the speaker to his or her field of study and what keeps driving them to continue life in math and science. For more information on our colloquia or lectures, or if you have any suggestions for lecturers you would wish to see, feel free to mail us at

Additional information Abstract: We study the rate of growth of sharp fronts of the Quasi-geostrophic equation and 2D incompressible Euler equations. The development of sharp fronts are due to a mechanism that piles up level sets very fast. Under a semi-uniform collapse, we obtain a lower bound on the minimum distance between the level sets. Extractions: The DiPerna Lectures The DiPerna Lecture was established by friends and colleagues as a memorial to Robert DiPerna after his untimely death 1989. Each year the Department of Mathematics invites an outstanding applied mathematician to deliver the DiPerna Lecture on recent advances in applied mathematics. Ronald J. DiPerna, a professor of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley, died in Princeton on January 8, 1989. At the time of his death he was a visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, NJ. His wife, Maria Schonbeck, is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. They have one daughter, Lauren. DiPerna was born in Sommerville, Massachusetts, on February 11, 1947. He received his Ph.D. at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University in 1972, and held faculty positions at Brown University, the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin and Duke University before coming to Berkeley in 1985.
