Proclus , the last major Greek philosopher, who lived around 450 AD wrote (see [1] or [9] or many other sources):- Not much younger than these pupils of Plato is Euclid, who put together the "Elements", arranging in order many of Eudoxus 's theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus 's, and also bringing to irrefutable demonstration the things which had been only loosely proved by his predecessors. This man lived in the time of the first Ptolemy; for Archimedes , who followed closely upon the first Ptolemy makes mention of Euclid, and further they say that Ptolemy once asked him if there were a shorted way to study geometry than the Elements, to which he replied that there was no royal road to geometry. Extractions: Using the text of Sir Thomas Heath's translation of The Elements , I have graphically glossed Books I - IV to produce a reader friendly version of Euclid's Plane Geometry. The four books contain 115 propositions which are logically developed from five postulates and five common notions . In the first proposition, Proposition 1, Book I, Euclid shows that, using only the postulates and common notions, it is possible to construct an equilateral triangle on a given straight line. In the hundred fifteenth proposition, Proposition 16, Book IV, he shows that it is possible to inscribe a regular 15-gon in a circle. And along the way he develops many beautiful, interesting, captivating, and pleasing results. You are invited to read this part of one of the world's great books. This presentation grew out of material developed for a mathematics course, Ideas in Mathematics , offered for liberal arts students at Furman. Every interested person, ninth grade student to ninety year old retiree, should be able to read most, if not all, of the material; that is the intended audience.

Extractions: Welcome to Euclid's Home Page! Euclid was a very famous mathematician. He was called the father of geometry. The best thing he was known for was his 13 volume The Elements Almost nothing is known about Euclid's life, but they do know what he was like as a historical figure, and here it is. Without him the world might not be as far in the world of mathematics or developed. As a mathematician he is ranked probably one of the highest, for writing The Elements , the base of geometry. He was also a teacher and when he founded a school in Alexandria, Egypt he taught there. He was a nice person, but he was often sarcastic. He most likely came from a rich family because when he was little he went to Plato's school and in ancient Greece only the rich had education. After he finished school he most likely went to Alexandria where he discovered geometry and then wrote The Elements which he based on what he discovered. Euclid of Alexandria was confused with Euclid of Megara for a while, who was also a mathematician. Euclid was a popular name back then, so he was confused with a lot of Euclid's of that time. But what set him apart from all the others was his amazing inventions. The great contribution to the world my mathematician made was basically geometry. In his book

Proclus Diadochus Euclid of Alexandria, author of the most successful mathematics textbook ever written and with the exception of Autolycusí Sphere , is author of the oldest Greek mathematical treatise extant. More than half of Euclidís works have been completely lost, others surviving the ages only through translations and interpretations. Little is known about his life, yet his name and writings have managed to continue being a major influence on geometry for two millennia. Much of what is believed to be known about Euclid comes from Proclusí Eudemian Summary . Proclus states that he was a contemporary of King Ptolemy I Soter. (305 - 285 B.C.E.) Some students of his work have asserted that he was in fact, a disciple of the Platonic school and had studied with students of Plato , possibly in Athens at the Academy. Euclid was older than Archimedes (287 - 212 B.C.E.) and Eratosthenes and younger than

Most information given on Euclid is not thought to be reliable. Euclid was a very common name around this period, so much of the material that is associated with Euclid of Alexandria is fictitious because there are many references to a man named Euclid. There are three hypotheses surrounding Euclid's life. 1. Euclid was a historical character who wrote the Elements and the other works attributed to him. 2. Euclid was a member of a group of mathematicians working at Alexandria. Each one contributed to writing the 'complete works of Euclid', with the group writing books under Euclid's name even after his death. 3. Euclid of Megara lived about 100 years before Euclid of Alexandria. Euclid of Alexandria didn't exist at all. A group of mathematicians wrote The 'complete works of Euclid and took the name Euclid from Euclid of Megara. The evidence surrounding the first hypothesis is substantial. Little evidence exists which contradicts this hypothesis because it was accepted without question by everyone for over 2000 years. Even though some of the books of the Elements, many authors vary their style. Besides, Euclid undoubtedly based the Elements of previous works, so it is quite feasible as to why the book are written in different styles.

Alexander the Great ruled a great part of the known world for twelve years until his death in 323 B.C. at the age of 33. At Alexander's death, His leading general, Ptolemy, became governor of Egypt and completed the city of Alexandria, Alexander's great monument in Egypt. Ptolemy devoted himself to making Alexandria the center for intellectual learning. Ptolemy set up the Museum in Alexandria for teaching and research. At the Museum, students pursued their studies with access to the finest libraries. In return for regular lectures, the members of the Museum received free board, exemption from taxes, and salary stipends. The lived in very luxurious conditions and ate their meals together in a vast dining hall. The Museum became a milestone in the history of science. The Museum was forever lost in 641 A.D., but Euclid was believed to have been one of its many gifted scholars. Elizabeth Dietz
