Extractions: A study of the relation between topology change, energy and Lie algebra representations for fuzzy geometry in connection to M-theory is presented. We encounter two different types of topology change, related to the different features of the Lie algebra representations appearing in the matrix models of M-theory. From these studies, we propose a new method of obtaining non-commutative solutions for the non-Abelian D-brane action found by Myers. This mechanism excludes one of the two topology changing processes previously found in other non-commutative solutions of many matrix-based models in M-theory i.e. in M(atrix) theory, Matrix string theory and non-Abelian D-brane physics. Extractions: January 12, 1999 Press Contact: Steve Koppes The University of Chicago Mathematics Department is sending tremors through the mathematics world. The department hired three new, world-renowned faculty members at the beginning of the fall 1998 quarter, and a fourth1990 Fields Medalist Vladimir Drinfeldhas just arrived from Ukraine. Fields Medals are the equivalent of Nobel Prizes in mathematics, according to Robert Fefferman, Louis Block Professor in Mathematics and Department Chairman. The medals are awarded to no fewer than two and no more than four mathematicians under the age of 40 every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians. Yuri Manin, director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany, and chairman of the Fields Prize Committee at the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin, offered an equally strong assessment of Drinfeld. Beilinson holds the prestigious first David and Mary Winton Green University Professorship in Mathematics. Since 1989, Beilinson has generally spent his fall semesters teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Professor in Mathematics, working the rest of the year as a researcher at the Landau Institute of Theoretical Physics in Chernogolovka, Russia. Nadirashvili said joining the Chicago faculty enables him to work with several mathematics professors whom he regards as the top scholars in his field of analysis.

Extractions: John von Neumann, left, with Robert Oppenheimer, Director of the Institute for Advanced Study from 1947-66. In 1946, John von Neumann organized a group to develop and construct at the Institute a large-scale, high-speed electronic computing instrument which could be used as a new tool for the mathematician, wrote Robert Oppenheimer in an Institute for Advanced Study publication entitled Report of the Director, 1948-1953. The group undertook an engineering research and development program, Oppenheimer continued, which culminated in January, 1952 with the completion of a machine. This machine was the prototype for a number built by various government agencies. It has also contributed ideas to a number of other groups which have produced comparable instruments. John von Neumann was a Faculty member in the School of Mathematics from 1933-57. The logical architecture of the IAS computer, documented in a series of progress reports published by the Institute at every stage of its development, remains the prototype for nearly all computers in use today. VLADIMIR VOEVODSKY APPOINTED TO FACULTY IN SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS The Institute for Advanced Study has announced the appointment of Vladimir Voevodsky as a Professor in the School of Mathematics.

Extractions: 1. According to the obituary notice for Jesse Douglas published in the October 8, 1965 edition of The New York Herald Tribune , he died at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and his funeral was held the following day at the "The Riverside" (the largest Jewish funeral chapel in New York City). Douglas, who was the first recipient of a Fields Medal, was born in New York City and educated at the City College of New York and at Columbia University. His entry in the 1964-1965 edition of Marquis Who's Who in America indicates that his mother's maiden name was Sarah Kommel. 2. Alexander Grothendieck, one of the most influential mathematicians of the second half of the twentieth century, is the German-born son of a Russian Jewish father and a German-Jewish mother. This is according to a recent memoir in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society (Vol. 38, No. 4, 2001, pp. 389-408) written by his close acquaintance, the mathematician Pierre Cartier. (See
