Extractions: home Subscribe for free news reviews ... about us Ray Girvan traces the rise of the machines - both digital and analogue - in an era of mechanical computation The dissident Soviet historian Roy Medvedev said of the course of history, that we can learn as much of our destination from the road by which we arrived (and even from the turnings that we didn't take) as from our present position. In the 1990 'cybernetic Victorian novel' The Difference Engine , William Gibson and Bruce Sterling memorably explored one such untaken turning. Their vision of an alternative 1855 showed a Britain in which Charles Babbage had successfully promoted his Analytical Engine, leading to a computer revolution a century early. But was this so clear-cut as a turning missed? The failure of Babbage's ideas in their time can lead to a mistaken impression of a 70-year hiatus in computing between Babbage's death and the post-1940s rise of electronic computers. In reality, only the general-purpose programmable digital computer went on hold. This article aims to be a sampler of the many styles of digital and analogue machine inhabiting a thriving era of mechanical computation. The last quarter of the 19th century was especially rich in calculating innovations. By this time, four-function manual digital calculators were already well-established as the cumbersome (but commercially successful) Thomas Arithmometers, developed by Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar from a Leibniz 'stepped-drum' design. In the 1870s, though, Willgodt Odhner and Frank Baldwin independently patented 'pinwheel' calculators. Smaller and more efficient, these came to dominate the scientific calculator market - in part due to Odhner's astute marketing of his patent rights - and continued to do, in largely unchanged form, for nearly a century.

Scientific Disciplines: Botany, Medicine, Surgery; His most important scientific work is the Historia generalis plantarum (1586-1687), the most complete botanical complilation of its time and the first to describe much of the flora peculiar to the region around Lyons. His other more or less original work is the Chirugie franciose (1570). Much of his effort was directed toward editing and translating earlier scientific and medical writings.

Extractions: 2. Father: Gentry; Government Position; Sir Archibald Napier was the 7th Laid of Merchiston. Gridgeman calls the family 'marginal aristocracy,' Jourdain is insistent that the family was not aristocratic. Gentry seem the correct category. The family had made its way up over the space of two centuries by service to the King. Sir Archibald, after a number of other offices, eventually became Master of the Mind. It seems clear that the father was wealthy. Napier inherited from him an estate sufficient to live well on. 4. Education: University of St Andrews; St. Salvator's College, St. Andrews, 1563. He was apparent-ly there only for a year and then went to the continent to study. Absolutely no evidence exists as to where he studied, but he returned home by 1571 as a scholar competent in Greek. No known B.A. A degree was not relevant to him.

Cognac is one of the most desirable and fascinating drinks in the world. It has variously been described as the King of Spirits, La Liqueur des Anges, and the Elixir of the Gods. Praise indeed for this beautiful, amber coloured spirit which originates from the Charentes region of western France and which is the product of a special double-distillation process, of the fruits of the local soil, of the skills of producers large and small and of time elapsed in the barrel where cognac acquires its unique characteristics. Although the Charentes area had been known as a wine producing region since Roman times, the distillation of wine in to an eau-de-vie that was christened Brandywijn (literally "burnt wine") by the Dutch traders who installed their stills there dates back to the early 1600's. The development of the cognac industry that we know today came about in the eighteenth century with the arrival of more foreigners, many of Anglo-Saxon origin, who were keen to secure their own supplies of the spirit which was increasingly popular in northern European countries - people such as Jean Martell from Jersey, Richard Hennessy and James Delamain from Ireland and Thomas Hine from England, who were to be the founders of some of the large cognac houses that dominate the region today.

He gave a critique of prevalent systems, and also a call for social transformation from a stance close to that of Comtean positivists, which can be located within the context of C19 colonial politics.
