Extractions: Fri Oct 22 02:58:26 PDT 2004 Hi Paul, You might want to have a look at http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/petsc/petsc-2/index.html All: I was wondering whats your choice for a parallel sparse linear solver? I have a beowulf cluster(~4 nodes, ok really small I know) connected at 100Mbps. The computers are P4 2.2GHz with 1Gb ram. The matrices are formed by a finite element program. They are sparse, square, symmetric, and I would like to solve problems with more than 200000 columns. Which of the solvers is easiest to set up and utilize? One problem I am trying to solve is 156,240 x 156,240 with 6,023,241 non-zero entries. Clausen Biography of thomas clausen (18011885) thomas clausen was taught by the local priest for whom thomas looked after cattle. He taught thomas Latin, http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Clausen.html
Extractions: Version for printing Thomas Clausen was taught by the local priest for whom Thomas looked after cattle. He taught Thomas Latin, Greek, mathematics and astronomy. Thomas studied several languages on his own, in particular French, English and Italian. Clausen became an assistant at Altona Observatory in 1824. However he had an argument with the director and left to succeed Fraunhofer at the Optical Institute at Munich. He did not carry out any duties in this post and was left on his own to undertake research into mathematics and astronomy. Clausen's work was recognised by many of the top scientists of the day including Olbers, Gauss Bessel , Hansen, Crelle , von Humboldt and Arago . However he suffered from mental illness and left Munich, returning to Altona. There he spent two years on his own doing some of the best science of his life. During this time he was engaged in an argument with Jacobi In 1842 he was appointed to the observatory in Dorpat, two years later receiving a doctorate for work carried out under
Thomas Clausen Trio 'My Favorite Things' for his own pleasure and certainly also ours. Berlingske Tidende, Denmark. thomas clausen Piano Jesper Lundgaard - Bass Peter Danemo - http://www.sundance.dk/website/thomas_clausen_trio__my_favori.htm
Extractions: There are 12 tunes on this cd; some of Clausen's favorites, a number of more or less reworked standards and a few selected works from the 52-year-old pianist's long career. The music is varied and at times almost naked. If Clausen made history with his first trio cd, "Rain", in 1980, this new one certainly adds a whole new chapter! "With his new cd Clausen makes a contribution to the unusually rich Danish cd output this year." Politiken, Denmark.

Extractions: In a graceful mix of Jobim, original tunes, standards and playful Brazilian samba Thomas Clausen once again transcends barriers. Brazilian music, jazz and even the European music tradition blend together in the most natural way. Thomas Clausen is a great, passionate artist, with experience and never ceasing curiosity. He is a brilliant composer, a sublime pianist and a generous improviser.

Velamare Skiff The lusty Danish team of Flemming clausen, thomas Ebler and Soren clausen, who love a strong breeze, made a superb start in Race 1 on GP Covers and opened http://www.velamareskiff.it/eng/eventi.php
Extractions: The 18 foot Skiff sailors were caught out by the weather conditions here in Sardinia yesterday (Wednesday). After the previous day's light winds, full gale conditions during the night made it seem at breakfast time highly unlikely that there could be any racing on the day. By the time of the daily one o'clock briefing it was considered to be still too bad to race, even though the high wind had moderated to a significant extent, and the fairly obvious decision was made to postpone for a while to see what would happen. An hour or so later there had been a further improvement, and it was decided the first race of the day would start at 15.30, so the entire fleet put up their number two rigs, or second suits as the Australians often call them. Some teams may have considered the possibility of the wind moderating even more, but nobody took the risk of 'going big'. As a result, the skiffs lined up in a breeze that had indeed reduced further in strength, to the extent that it was impossible for more than two of the crew to be on their trapezes. Nobody would deny that the 18 footer is a fast and exciting boat, but there is one condition when it feels anything but lively, and that is under the small rig when it really should be under the large one. The situation is exacerbated if there are left over waves, which was the case yesterday.

Extractions: The Haas School Honors former Bank of America and World Bank Chief A.W. 'Tom' Clausen with its Lifetime Achievement Award By Thomas York As a child in the 1930s, A.W. "Tom" Clausen sat with his Norwegian-born father and grandfather in front of the family radio each night after dinner to hear news about the rise of Hitler in Europe and the war in China. He listened well into the evening while the two older men discussed the grim events that plagued the planet. This was Clausen's first taste of internationalism the idea that the world's nations become increasingly interdependent with each passing day. "Hearing about Europe, about the invasion of China by Japan, and about the world experiences of my father and grandfather hooked me on the international side of things at a young age," said Clausen. He has stayed true to this international perspective over the course of a four-decade career highlighted by stints as chairman and CEO of Bank of America, and a term as president of The World Bank.
