    Extractions: Georges Contenau (p. 166) cites evidence that isopsephia (the Greek word for gematria , which he uses) was widely used in Mesopotamia. In this case numerical values were assigned to the characters in their syllabary, and the numerical values of names were computed. (This also fits in with the general Mesopotamian reverence for numbers: all the Gods had numbers, which Simo Parpola has shown to be numerically related by the Assyrian Tree of Life.) For example, Sargon (d.705 BCE) states that the perimeter of his palace at Khorsabad (16283 cubits) was equal to his name. The next datable source for gematria I know about comes from David Fideler's Jesus Christ: Sun of God . He argues that the standard spellings of the Gods' names were formulated according to isopsephic principles under the influence of the Pythagorean League c. 500 BCE (p. 75). So for example, Zeus is the Geometric Mean of Hermes and Apollo (p. 72). He further argues (pp. 216-9) that many Greek temples, such as the Parthenon (447 BCE) and Apollo's temple at Didyma (300 BCE), were constructed isopsephically. This use of gematria in temples and other official buildings agrees with its only known etymology, from Greek

    Extractions: I have been enjoying participating in the Distributed Proofreaders project (in which many volunteers share the task of proofreading an e-book before it goes to Project Gutenberg ). In a recent conversation on one of the DP forums, someone remarked that there are no books in PG by Sir Isaac Newton. Being interested in satellites, and knowing what a revered work Newton's Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (the " Principia ") is, I decided to look further into this work, to evaluate what needs to be done to turn it into a PG e-book. The first task is acquiring the text. Very quickly I discovered that there have been many published versions of Principia Original: Latin, 3 editions by Isaac Newton, 1687 Translation: English, by Motte, 1729: Nearly every English edition is based on this. This translation apparently was based on Newton's 2nd edition (there were 3). Chittenden, N. W., " Newton's Principia: The mathematical principles of natural philosophy "; 1846; New York (Daniel Adee); 581 p.: Billed as "1st American, carefully rev. and cor., edition". Library of Congress No. QA803 .A45 1848. Chittenden also includes "Newton's System of the World" at the end, plus a portrait and extensive biography of Newton. (In comparing this book to the Cajori 1934 work, you can see that Cajori turned the prose into formulas, which makes Cajori more accessible.)

    Extractions: Edward Olney (ALL-nee*) , son of Benjamin Olney and Lucy Emerson, was born in Moreau, Saratoga County, New York, on July 24, 1827. His ancestry can be traced back to Thomas Olney who accompanied Roger Williams in founding the city of Providence and colony of Rhode Island. Benjamin Olney's family moved to Oakland County, Michigan, in 1833 and, a few months later, settled on a farm in Weston, Wood County, Ohio. Opportunities for formal education on the frontier were sparse, and Olney was largely self-taught. Calloway [2] tells about Edward hiring a neighbor boy to drive the team of oxen on the Olney farm so that he could attend school for six weeks in order to master Day's Algebra . During this time he also ran an arithmetic school at home in the evenings in order to earn the money to pay for his substitute driver. At age 19, Olney began his career as a teacher in the local elementary schools, while studying mathematics, natural science, and languages on his own. Cajori [1] reports that "though he had never studied Latin, he began teaching it and kept ahead of the class because he 'had more application'." In 1848 Olney was hired as a teacher in the district school at Perrysburg, Ohio. The following year he was named principal of the grammar department in the new Union School. Over the next five years he would become the school's superintendent, marry Miss Sarah Huntington (a teacher at the school), and receive an honorary A. M. degree from Madison University (now Colgate University) in Hamilton, New York. Today there is an Olney School in Lake Township, Wood County, named after him [3].

An extraordinary case of computer error occurred long before the advent of mechanical and electronic computers, however, as noted by Charles Babbage in an 1827 publication entitled On Errors Common to Many Tables of Logarithms Early astronomers spent long periods of time making calculations for tracking and predicting the orbits of comets, planets, and moons, and for determining the occurrence of eclipses. For example, in calculating the orbit of Halley's Comet, the French astronomer Joseph de Lalande (1732-1807) said: " During six months, we calculated from morning till night, sometimes even at meals, the consequence of which was, that I contracted an illness which changed my constitution for the remainder of my life. The assistance rendered by Madame Lepaute was such, that without her, we never could have dared to undertake the enormous labour, in which it was necessary to calculate the distance of each of the two planets, Jupiter and Saturn, from the comet, and their attraction upon that body, separately for every successive degree, and for 150 years.
